Are you sure the noise is coming from the pump? could be the timing belt tensioner or the alternator. you could rule out the power steering or a/c compressor by starting the car with these belts off. If the water pump spins quietly by hand,doesn't have any play and its not leaking then its ok. mark

actually, instead of the water pump, check the fan clutch.
