2002 Passat Low Oil Pressure

My oil pressure indicator comes on for about 5 seconds, then goes away. I checked the oil and it is fine, right up to the line.

Why would the oil pressure light go on? I'm taking it in over the weekend but... any ideas?

1.8T engine? If so, its possible your oil pickup screen has clogged from sludge/coking of the oil. Not uncommon in these engines, esp. if non-synthetic oil has been used or a long OCI.

It means you have a low oil pressure issue and maybe covered by warranty once your dealer checks it out. You will need to show oil change records or receipts for oil filters & oil over the years.

That may be. This happened after I added oil. It was very low. Probably low enough to pick up sludge.

Yes, it is a 1.8T. The last oil change I took my own oil. (Synthetic

5W/30).

Unfortunately, I do not have oil change records (except for the last one.). My mechanic told me it may be the oil pump. Kinda for the same reasons. If the oil got low, then the pump may have got debris in it.

Since the VW dealership charges 125.00 just look at the car, I may have my mechanic change the oil pump and screen.

It doesn't happen often. Only a couiple of times and only for about 5 seconds, then it goes out and doesn't come back.

It scares the crap out of me though.

I bought the car because it was incredibly FUN to drive (and becuase I couldn't afford the additional 10 grand for the Audi). Now I'm babying (sp) it.

Thanks guys. Rich
