Rattles inside

My 2002 Jetta 1.8T had two different rattles up close to the windshield under the dash. One in front of driver and the other closer to passenger. Both were found and quieted by VW Techs.

I just traded it in for a 2003 Jetta GLS TDI. Yea! Again I have two rattles. One in the driver B Pillar and the other sounds like it is coming from around the area of where you turn the dial for the sunroof. I have an appointment next Friday (12th) to have them taken care of.

I was wondering if this is normal. What rattles have you had? Were you able to have them taken care of, and what did they have to do to fix?

Oh! I am so glad they got rid of the drop-down cup holder. Now there are two real cup holders in the consol. I know I am going to like this car!

Yeah, its pretty normal. My 2001 GTI with only 22000 miles on it has similar issues. One really annoying squeak at the B piller area as the car moves over road irregularities. I think its the door latch. Probably related to chassis flex. Get it on the right piller int eh same area. Both seem to come and go. Right now the driver door one is constant. Also got one somewhere in the top of the dash. Seems to be right at the defroster vent. Stops if I press down on the defroster vent. Also have a rattle near the right rear passenger seat. Seems to come and go. Not sure if its the seat or the side panel. Disappoints me since the initial interior construction seems so rock solid. Expect them on alot of American cars as many of the interiors seems poorly assembled on many models. In relation to Japanese vs German thread and my feelings toward them problems like this are not as common on Toyotas, Hondas or many of their Japanese counterparts and I've been around enough Hondas and Toyotas over the years to know. Actually weirdly my 164000 mile Jetta GLI seems to have less interior rattles then my 2001 GTI or maybe I just can't hear them because the car lets more outside noise in and my Techtonics exhaust is a bit loud :-). Actually the only annoying rattle I know of on my old GLI is the mechanism inside the latch of the damn annoying door mounted safety belts. Also my rear license plate rattles. That I could have stopped easy with some foam behind the plate but I'm lazy :-)

Positive side note: My GLI has the original clutch in it and I've owned

2 other VW's both A1 and A2's that have broke well over 170000 miles on original factory clutch as well. Figured I'd throw that in :-)

I have a 2003 TDI and it has a few rattles as well. The first week I had the car, the front right dash (close to the defroster vent) was rattling for a bit. Stopped the next day. A few weeks later, the tweeter casing behind the driver seat started rattling. That is off and on, and lately it has been very bothersome. I may have to complain about it if it doesn't stop soon. maybe I'll get it done during next oil change.

Is it true that you can only do these kinds of things during the first year? Isn't that the "adjustment" period?

Adjustment warranty is 12 months/12,000 miles. Free replacement wipers and rattle adjustments during this period.
