VR6 oil pan gasket?

I'm about to change the oil pan gasket on my 95 Passat VR6. Question to all that have been there before, since reading past posts and FAQ's there's several different opinions.

Do I go with a fiber gasket or a rubber one (rubber is there now).

If I use a gasket, does anybody recommend RTV silicone on the gasket, pan or engine side. I've usually assembled pan gaskets dry both sides

Some posts said no gasket at all, just RTV gasket-maker gooped on the top of the pan and put on.

Rest looks easy, remove the differential dust cover (2 x 11mm bolts), the serpentine belt bottom cover (3 or 4 screws), and then the 26 x 5mm hex screws.

Thanks, Guido

Very easy but dirty and if you don't torque the bolts evenly you can be looking at some leaks. I didn't use sealant on my OEM gasket and according to someone I know in service at the stealership sealant isn't recommended and it should be installed dry. Just make sure the pan, block and bolts are clean before you put it back together. Just alternate cross tightening and it will go in fine - just torque the bolts evenly because the pan can warp and leave small gaps. Basically a pretty cheap job just REALLY messy.
