VW/Audi oil-to-coolant cooler gasket

It takes a circular seal, flat on the top and bottom, that looks a lot like the oil filter seal but slightly more rounded and thinner. Some even use a used oil filter seal (Mann,VW, Mahle) instead of the original seal with great success. ;-)

I just replaced this in my 86 GTi a couple weeks ago. The old (split) one that came out was flat on top and bottom and rather stiff (and did I mention split?)

This part has apparently gone through a couple revisions however, and is now made of a different material and is no longer flat on the top and bottom. There's a new part number for it that I dont have on me at the moment, but the VW parts counter guys have them all cross-referenced and can point you in the right direction.

FYI, the gasket was like $5.25 after tax from the dealer. I've seen them for less than a buck on the web, but after shipping it came out about the same.

Thanks for the info. A gasket from a new/old oil filter would definitely be the cheapest. FWIW, I'm considering putting a VW heat exchanger/cooler on my '95 Saturn as it is the same dimensions as the oil filter (3/4x16 and 3" wide) and Saturns tend to be very hot IMHO. The oil tends to get burned and contaminated with soot in no time. I've read that when the timing is retarded to prevent engine knock from excess heat then this reduces power and introduces more emissions (more oil contamination). I also like the idea of early warmup.
