'92 key/ignition problem

Hey guys, I have an odd problem. I just bought this vehicle, but was told this is a regular problem. The key won't insert into the ignition fully about 70% of the time (and no, not becaues the steering wheel is turned and putting pressure on it). Sometimes I have to give it a good whack to get it to go all the way in, which cannot be a good thing! And when I pull the key out of the ignition, opening the door triggers the chime to let me know that the car thinks the key is still in the ignition.

Anybody have some suggestions for me? Thanks!

A new lock cylinder and key should be available from any parts monger for under $20CA. Your Haynes of Chiltons will have full instructions for replacing this piece.

I recommend changing it now, before it becomes necessary to drill it out...

Thank you! I received the same advice from another forum, too, so its good to hear. I just bought the Haynes manual and it seems an extremely simply procedure (push in thingie, pop out cylinder, push in thingie again & pop in new cylinder). I've never worked on a car before at all, so it is nice to see that this one thing should be easy!

Sad to say, Tyler, all the things we do to our cars aren't usually this simple. Work carefully, since you are new to auto repairs, plan each step (dress rehearsals are something I do on occasion - going through the mnotions without actually doing anything.... really helps when fitting cylinder heads or other difficult to reach assemblies).

Good luck.
