FFS! Intercooler full of oil....

Just undid the top intercooler hose on the 300tdi to find lots of engine oil. I am presuming this is a Turbo problem?

Help!

Yes, but isn't there a specialists in Bradford though "AR turbo engineering" ? The price I had for the 200Tdi turbo was 125 quid for a set of new seals and bearings, and rebalancing - 2 years ago

There is a place in Undercliffe that does turbo re-conditioning, not sure if it is suitable etc though?

Yeah, I know it, near the garage? I'll give 'em a ring tomorrow.

You should have seen it this morning. I wonder why it stops doing it, you would think it would biollow out all the time?

Don't jump too quickly ....

Check first that there is not 'excessive' radial or axial movement on the turbo shaft, that the turbo blades ahve not contacted the housing at either end and that there are no damaged blades. If any of these exist it probably is a recon. job.

If the turbo looks OK check the air inlet side for restrictions bearing in mind that the oil that you are seeing may have accumulated over an extended period and also that the cause e.g. blocked air cleaner may have been rectified. Other than the air cleaner itself check hoses carefully for collapsed linings etc..

Clean everything out - that includes the intecooler, obviously - and retest.

I'll admit that your first diagnosis may well turn out to be correct but don't turn a blind eye to other possibilities.

So too much suction in the air inlet can do that too ? Hmm. Must look at mine again ! Thanks for that mate Steve

Yes, it sucks oil out of the turbo past the seals.

Cheers Dougal, the odd thing is it only does the mega smoke for 5 or 6 miles, then it clears up a bit. There is a lot of oil in the top of the intercooler.

Could it be comeing from the inlet manifold at all? I don't see how.

There is no lack of performance as you would get with a collapsing hose.

Very odd.

Nige,

I thought your smoking problem might be this. When you get the turbo looked at, get the exhaust flushed :(

You may have a pint or too of oil in there as well, my mate did :(

It was wear in the turbo that did his.

Hiya Nige

Mine did smmat simmilar on the way back from south Wales last year. Took turbo to the turbocentre at heckmondwyke they asses why the turbo failed before they rebuild it in my case they suspected oil starvation so had to change feed and return pipes before they would warranty it also they told me there was most likely a thrust washer in the sump and I should remove sump and clean it out I did this and they were bang on! My unit was beond repair so they sorced me a good second hand one and refurbed that for us. Its still running sweet 12 months on..

You have never seen a turbo like it & the fact it still worked was incredible.

The exhaust has a bit in, not too bad, but I reckon the cat will be fubar.
