Marque Day pics

I've just put the pics up from Marque Day yesterday.

What a day!

Posh Ted had a super 'official' start to his journey on the Marque Run

- even got to meet Bob Dover, Chief Executive of Land Rover / Jaguar until he retired on 1st May - this was his first 'in retirement' event and he nearly kidnapped poor Ted...

Max was also made an Honorary Member of the Discovery Owners Club!

Smashing day and to be honest, I doubt any of the other shows in the forthcoming season will be able to match this.

Pics are here:

Nice pictures, specially those of the new Disco. Dads been seeing these virtually every night on his way home from work for the last 3 weeks or so!. I've bumped into them a couple of times as well. Tried keeping up with them but my little corsa comba van don't like it.....maybe thats why the turbos gone after just 5,550 miles?!.

That would be great. Posh Ted could end his journey back at Marque Day, and with 'Dad' :-)

your site seems to be AWOL ATM.

I could say it was due to heavy demand, however, the truth is that I'd forgotten I'd moved the site to a different box, so when I rebooted the different box... erm... oops :-)

Same here. Get message that Safari can't open the connection as the server has been reset and to try agaian later.

Didn't get to Gaydon after all. Been looking for a caravan and not had much luck with what we want, so if anyone has or knows of a 5 or 6 berth twin axle caravan with end bedroom and cassette toilet, let me know 'cos I'm fed up with looking!

For us it started as one of our Darkest days... only that morning I was at the Vets doing the only decent thing I could for our old friend Zak.

Anyway I made the decission that once we'd given him a decent send off, we set off understandably late for the show with Sally, our other dog onboard this time. Normally the two would have stayed at home with my mum dog sitting, but theres no way we could have left her behind and to be honest the show was just the distraction we all needed.

So after following the shortest but not so quickest route along the A34 (Thanks Infomap!!) out of brum off the A38 we were to arrive at Gaydon. We left Stoke on brilliant sunshine and the trip turned really dismal onroute.

We pulled up on site and I was still concerned not only about our late booking of the campsite but also the fact we were arriving after 5pm. Anyway we managed to get our camping fees payed up ok and then wandered off into the site... The words "Turn left after the second bin" seemed to blur into the background as we entered the site we spotted grumble and the entrance to the site, my concentration still wasn't 100%. We commited to the path toward the gate entrance, it was only once I'd committed and then looked and saw the second bin some distance further on that I realised we'd missed the prescribed route. At about the same time Alfies wheels began to spin and we came to a slow halt. Theres no Diff lock on Alfie (Viscous coupling) so fiddling was reduced to slipping it into low and trying a couple of times but that new caravan makes for one cracking mud anchor and after all we were at the home of Mud.

I've just spied Martyns piccsy and I did think I could blag a reverse recovery of a 101 with the caravan on too but I guess that would be a bit too far from the truth :-) Still a big thanks to Al for coming to the rescue. It was also at this point that given all the turmoil of the day I realised I had forgotten the rope, shackles and bridle... but fortunately those recovery rings were fitted and a rope soon surfaced as Karen noted multiple people across the site reaching into there cars and pulling kit out "I've got one!".

Later that evening we sat and watched some of the feature presentation in the wide screen Grumbleplex cinema.. Conor loved it and I was realy getting into it but the cold and time meant we had to throw in the towel and go and have a family scrum down for mutual support re our earlier loss.

Next day as Martyns Piccys show looked grim from the outset.. I never noticed any rain in the night and I got very little sleep but it seemed even wetter in the morning. I began to question the logic in staying any longer once we had done the show. Anyway as ever the sun came out to shine on Gaydon for the second year I've attended.. We wandered the stalls and stands but sadly were unable to do the museum as we had Sally to think of. She's never been unaccompanined, so leaving her in the car alone just wasn't an option.

Anyway, Landrovers being Landrovers Alfie had been playing up on the way down.. As we had pulled on site we could smell that really hot pads smell. Favorite was the caliper I'd had trouble with last year and sure enough a probe with the old finger once the caravan was on it's jacks proved that it had reached sticky skin temperature - the sort that make you ask yourself "Why did I just touch that!!".

So I had a cunning plan.. all I needed was one of those Jack pads (cos of the mud!), a can of WD40 and some copper slip would have been really peachy. Now you'd think at a Landrover show WD40 and Jack pads would have been quite easy to find..but alas no... this was proving to be a mother of a weekend. Anyway I stood at the Anchor supplies stand and took a pause to think what to do... as I did so I spotted the ex-military shovels and picks... yes it's drastic I know! But I'd seen people in the mags using shovels as base plates for jacks so what the hell. Besides I needed them as well for Morph but had been putting off purchase but the time had now come.

Turned out later that the Brake caliper was that caked in cooked on crud that the pad had been forced at an odd angle and the metal of the pad had touched the hub type part of the disk grinding an everso minor grove (not the disk surface though!). This had been the source of the heat. A good cleaning with a screwdriver and reassembly sorted the problem and we were then ready for another circuit of the show feeling a little better about the trip home.

After some consultation we decided not to stick around another night incase of more rain, the site had dried out sufficently during the day for us to make an exit without need of recovery or adding any damage to the field.

We had some good chats with other 101 owners and picked up plenty of tips. And hopefully at the next event we'll be in Morph with the Diff lock repair being top of my list of things to do before entering another Landrover Campsite.
