Broke cambelt 1989 Audi 80e 1.8i

Hi all and thanks for reading this post.

I expect this question has been asked many times though I cannot find it on dejanews.

My cam belt broke today, travelling at approximately 30mph. I took the car out of gear almost immediately.

What are the chances of the engine being screwed? My mate has suggested putting a new belt on and seeing what happens, he said we maybe lucky and is worth a try for the sake of a tenner.

I know it is would be worth more than the car's worth to have the engine rebuilt, I got a quote for 750pounds VAT inclusive, but i feel that the car would be useable for another 4-5 years.

I think I would get a piece of s**t for 750 in London area, or would I?

Thank you for your kind attentions :O)

Well you'll find an 89 AUdi 80 for £750. I'd try the belt & then check the compression. Check

see if it's an interference engine but most 1980's 1.8s aren't.

Thank you for the link Duncan. For reference I will post what happened, in the even that someone else may encounter the same problem.

Regards.

A friend had a escort diesel and their belt snapped. They were travelling slowly at the time. I think there was only minor damage to a valve.

So go for the cam belt first and see.
