noise whilst idling...

Hi,

I have a Nissan Micra 1995 NCVT (automatic) 1.0 litre as a cheap run-around-town at the minute... it has 70,000 miles on the clock, and is perhaps not in the best condition it could be ;-)

I recently went over a speed-bump, and ever since (perhaps not connected) when idle (even in drive/park) 80% of the time there's a funny deep rattling noise, it can build up quite severely; and i've no idea what it is! It could just be something metallic vibrating. I have briefly compared the under-side of the car to another similar Micra model, and apart from the obvious dirt, everything else looks to be the same; ie:nothing is blatently bumped or out of place.

I read up on google about the possibility of it being the throttle-body, and numerous other things. I was just wondering if anybody had any experience of dodgy idle-noises... the noise is a deep rumble that also sounds like metallic vibrating, but it's very hard to tell what part of the car it's coming from. It's a right-hand drive, and sounds like it's coming from the left-middle section, but I couldn't gaurantee that's where it's emanating from.

Thanks in advance,

Taylor.

It's almost certain to be a body rattle. You'll have to keep looking until you find it. Not always easy.

Shattered ceramic honeycomb in the catalytic converter is a likely candidate. Shake it to see if it rattles. The cat. costs about £200.

Reminds me of a few years ago when my wife took the Mondeo to her sisters in Scotland. She could hear a continuous beeping noise and nearly took the car to a garage to determine the cause (she thought it might have been one of the car's electronic warning devices). When she returned home I found that I had left my copper pipe/electrical cable detector in the boot and it had been switched on by luggage moving around. Nearly cost a packet!! What I would say from this experience is completely empty the car of anything not originally part of the vehicle, then have another look (you would be surprised at the amount of noise that a few coins can make)!

It may be the heat shield around the cat or part of the exhaust.

Thanks all, I think it's something hitting off the exhaust chasis; will get kwik-fit to redo their s**te welding :-0
