Will the 2006 Prius be the last Prius built?

Probably not. Toyota has already said that the next generation hybrid system will debut in the 2008 Prius.

Why do you suspect that 2006 may be the last model year?

Because a salesman told me it was Toyota's intention to use the Prius to perfect Hybrid Synergy and then transfer the technology to all its other cars. The Prius would then be retired having served its purpose. I don't want this to be true. I'd like to buy another. Since this was from a salesman, I didn't believe it entirely. They feel they must be dishonest whenever they speak.

If they successfully transfer the technology to their other cars, and if one of these works as efficiently as the prius, I'll buy that instead. Still, I tend to think this is just a rumor looking for legs.

His story doesn't square with the history of the car: it was intended to be a 21st Century design from the ground up, a year before the specs were tightened so that only a hybrid system could meet the new fuel efficiency requirements. The passenger capsule, emission control and suspension are all newer than any of the previously existing Toyotas. From

It seems likely the Prius model will be around after the Camry is supplanted by a vehicle that is designed by Toyota's new techniques. It's clear Toyota enjoys its new standing as a force to be reckoned with and it will probably try to build on that.

I do recall reading somewhere not too long ago, probably in a newspaper article, that Toyota plans to sell all of its vehicles with a hybrid option as soon as possible.

I can see how that makes sense, but whether or not it's true is another story. Right now, apparently the only person who's said anything to this effect is that salesman.

I think it's more like they don't necessarily feel any need to be honest if dihonesty suits their needs.

Not the suspension, which is a straight rip from the Avensis (front) and Corolla (rear, and merely good ol' torsion bar)

The general point is valid, however. Toyota are proud to call the Prius "The most technologically advanced car on the road today" (2004 UK Press Pack) and the chances of them discontinuing it this decade are zero. They see it as their flagship car in many ways.

I could always be wrong, you know ;-)

I got my info from pages 61/62 of the link, but it could also be the novel "H" ("eta") suspension didn't find its way into production.
