swapping autostick for 'regular' 4 spd in a ghia, parts needed list? maybe 5 spd?

I want to convert my 71 ghia 1600DP with autostick to "normal" 4 speed. I have some of the 'major' items already, but need some others, but not sure which exactly. I've already read the excellent conversion site at

butthere's no complete 'checklist of all parts needed' there items I already HAVE: the 4 spd itself 'loose' the throwout bearing and its 2 'clips' the 'normal' oil pump == == == == == == == items I know I still NEED:

*the clutch disc and pressure plate *pressure plate BOLTS *the flywheel and four dowel pins, *plus the thin flywheel endplay 'shims' *plus the flywheel GLAND NUT *pedal assembly (same year) *pedal cover (steel sheetmetal) plate with THREE slots in it... *the lower 'studs' that fasten engine to trans *the upper 2 (shorter) bolts and nuts that bolt engine to trans *clutch bowden tube *clutch cable itself with the 'cone shaped nut' for adjusting it (or is it 'wing nut' shaped that year?) *regular 4 speed 'shifter' along with 'shift gate' that mounts under it (same yr) or can I reuse the same auto-stick shifter? *shift tube BUSHING (white nylon?) *shift 'tube' or 'shift rod' (goes from shifter bottom to trans front) OR just "drill out" the "hockey stick end" of the old one? *need different rubber 'mounts' for the 4 speed? or do I? *the two CV-jointed 'shafts' (from the trans sides to the rear wheel stub axles) are the SAME in the autostick car as the 4 spd car uses, correct? or? *rear engine 'tin' (big crosspiece by crankshaft pulley) withOUT holes in it for ATF lines etc *SHORTER oil pump mounting studs *I -can- use the -same- crankshaft, correct? *I -can- reuse the same starter, correct? *what _other_ items ??? == == == == == == == most important question: which parts am I still gonna need that I've forgotten in the list above? which other '4 speed specific' bolts, fasteners, or -other- "more substantial" parts do I need that I've overlooked? == == == == == == == on a side note: if anyone has a "SCAT type" (or simialar) spin-on oil filter adapter/bigger oil pump Unit-Thing-Adapter-Device (UTAD, a new "technical term") sitting around they wanna sell, pls contact me by direct e-mail/thanks :-) == == == == == == == on an even 'further out' aside: is there any way to obtain a FIVE speed trans for the ghia that isn't "way pricey" for the transmission unit itself? like I'd think a used porsche 912 gearbox price range might be 'too rich' for me right now - goal is to have freeway cruise speed sustainable with 'other normal traffic' (aka the normal 75 mph or so). like is there a way to change SOME of the gears inside the 4 spd transaxle to make them 'taller', perhaps, as a tightwad guys way to achieve that goal? like maybe just the third and 4th gear gearsets?

thanks for illuminating me :-)

Do you have to install a clutch cable tube or does it already have one? later, dave Reminder........ Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes. Frieda Norris

clutch tube is (fortunately) already in place. was _first_ thing I checked, before I got the 4 speed and throwout bearningg, etc...so far.

so, did I 'miss' any items I'm gonna need from my list?

thanks :-)

You had a pretty complete list.

Make sure the tranny you got will fit; the front and rear mounts changed in '73. Make sure the pressure plate you use is the correct one for the tranny. Look on my web site for the 6V/12V article. (I know you don't have 6V, but the article shows the clutch problem.) Yes, the axles with CV's are the same.

I would measure the crank play on the engine *before* removing the autostick drive plate. That may tell you important info about the condition of the old engine. If it reads out of spec (.006") you could have a problem.

Best luck,

are you saying the transmission CASES are different dimensionally, or 'just' the "mounts" are different in size/bolt centers or something?

so it's not just a simple matter of 'is it 180mm or 200mm then?

ok, will do, and thanks :-)

too late for that. engine is on stand, being rebuilt now. now's the right time to decide if I'm gonna convert to 4 spd...I have the right dial indicator for end play adjusting, though..."been down that road before" :-)

thanks jim :-) much

wouldn't happen to know if 'loose gears' to change my tranny gearing are available from anyone, would ya? being a tightwad, I'd like a higher "freeway" speed" at lower RPM, steadily, for as cheap as possible

Not the case, but the mounts. '73 and later use a different nosecone/rubber mount. You can swap nosecones between years (but not from an autostick).

The rear "carrier" (sheet metal frame) also changed in '73 and that can be swapped.

No, the throwout bearing changed in '71 and must match the pressure plate.
