325 se help needed

Ive bought a 325 se on a j plate which had a cracked head between a valve and a water way.

so i bought a second hand one from a 525 on a L plate. the casting numbers on the head is the same and it all looks the same.

started her up and it runs bad. timing is spot on and all the pipes are fine.

Did they use different cams on the 525 ?

Any help on this will be much Appreciated dave

J reg is M50, L reg should be M50TU with VANOS variable valve timing. The TU has a protrusion in front of the inlet cam for the VANOS gear, normal M50 doesn't.
