Lawn Mower Noises

Well, it has finally started getting cold. Along with the cold, my truck, an 02 Duramax, has started making a strange noise. It sounds kind of like an edger making contact with cement, or maybe a weed eater at idle. The sound seems to be coming from the botton of the engine somewhere, and only happens when it's cold and the truck hasnt warmed up yet. Any thoughts on what it is?

Climb under the truck and listed for the sound. Look around any sheet metal attached to the truck. Generally this sound comes from heat shields that resonate at certain vibrations. When diesels are cold they idle "strange" until the cylinders build up enough heat.

good luck, mark

Do a google or yahoo search for piston slap. There lies your answer.

Hi!

The Duramax has piston slap?

If so, what a shame...

I don't think so. The sound he described sounds like a rattling heat shield. Piston slap sounds similar to a valve tick but lower in the block. His description was it sounds like a lawn mower blade hitting cement or a high pitch screech. I would really like to know if GM *still* feels it was a good idea removing the piston skirts. Yes, it reduces reciprocating mass but with all of the bad P.R. was it a good idea or are just staying with the design in an effort not to admit it was a mistake???
