I have at last got my rebuilt 948 Sprite engine running. Mindful of the extensive modifications, I fitted a 9-spring clutch - of doubtful provenence. I now find it's impossibly heavy for road use. Strange, as the springs are of the same grade (yellow) as the old 6-spring, so it should not be more than 50% heavier. Anyway, many moons ago I fitted a Spitfire clutch to a Sprite and it was 9-spring as standard. Worked very well. But I can't remember what type it was. Are there any clutch experts in this group? Which one do I need to fit a 948 A-series flywheel? BTW I only need the cover as I have of course already fitted a new driven plate and release bearing.

When I was looking for a clutch for a Moggie 1000, I saw one on Ebay for a
948 that was also listed for a Spit. I think it was either a mk1 or 2 Spitfire though, one with a sub 1100cc engine.Don't know if that helps at all?
Yes I think Mk1 Spit fits 948 Sprite - I was just hoping for a part number.
Isn't there a diaphragm spring one available? These tend to be lighter in operation for a given torque capacity.

Moss was listing one but they have stopped it. I'm rooting through Spitfire info right now, but I really need a decent source of Borg & Beck data. There is of course a Spit diphragm one but I don't know the diameter. I need 6¼".
One wholesaler I use shows the early 1147cc Spitfire with coil spring clutch having the same plate as the 948cc Sprite, part number GCP102, the other component number are not shared according to my listings. The later 1147 &
1296cc Spitfires used a 165mm diaphragm clutch, part numbers are GCC197 for the cover, GRB207 for the release bearing and GCP138 & GCP190A are interchangeable for the plate. The flywheel was basically the same between these Spitfires, except that the bolt holes and dowels were repositioned - the same approach mght work with the Sprite? I don't know if any of this helps, but you can never have too much information. The 1493cc (1500) engined Spitfires used a larger 184mm clutch which is unlikely to be of use to you. Cheers, Bill.
