The compass and temp went out on the overhead console of my '97 Explorer EB today. Any clues on where to start looking?

In the fuse box.
The mode button below the display toggles the display from English units to Metric units to Off and back to English again. Ensure the display hasn't been inadvertently turned off before needless detailed troubleshooting is begun.
