I would like to add a after market temperature sensor to a 1972 LTD (400 cu. in.). Where is the stock sensor located. Thank you

If memory serves, it is on the left side of the block near the bottom.

Follow the wiring from the firewall, some times in near the top part of the block, on some Windors is at the bottom, but usually if you trace your wiring, it leads to the sensor

--If it's the same as the 289-302 it's on the intake manifold right behind the thermostat. Standing in front of the motor it's behind and a hair to the left of the distributor.

Pretty good trick, since the 400 has a dry manifold.
The previous poster was right - it's on the block under the power steering pump. Not easy to get to, either.
