I just bought a 2001 Crown Vic LX with the keyless door entry. The manual
says to enter the factory code, then go about your business of changing

You cannot change the factory code, it's permanently set. You may need
to look around to find the label that lists the code. Some areas to look:
Underneath the trunk lid area, under the dash next to the brake.
