2005 F150: Ignition Key Will not Turn

Drove to the Y, worked out, got back in the vehicle, inserted key in ignition.. Key would not rotate, gearshift lever locked.
Seems to have plenty battery.
Came back today, tried the spare key, same result - so I do not think it is the key/transponder.
Anybody been here?
Maybe the fuse that serves that system?
Or is it tow-truck time?

If there's a solenoid on your firewall, check to make sure it's engaging. If it isn't, you can (very carefully) short-circuit across the two posts. That will give you a bump to get you home.
The safer choice would be to have it towed home, and then diagnose it with a voltmeter, and look for the short.

Hi,
I have had situations where the steering-wheel lock has pressure on it (like the truck was turned off with the key, but the steering-wheel lock didn't catch until the steering wheel was turned somewhat, which then puts a load on the lock. Can you wiggle the steering wheel while trying to turn the key?

Per DuaneKaufman:

Bingo !!!!
Actually, that was the first thing I tried - but didn't want to go overboard and maybe break something.
Went back today, went for broke on it and it worked.
I think I will add a rubber mallet to my onboard toolkit....
You saved me a couple hundred bucks and feeling foolish when the tow truck guy did it instead....
Thanks!!!!

If it happens in the future, you can bypass the start position on your vehicle by cross-connecting the positive terminal of your battery with the signal from the solenoid. Usually a pair of pliers will do it. Touch one side to the positive side, the other to the small input pin and it will engage your starter. Be sure to disconnect it quickly when it fires.
That will at least get you home.

Read the manual...there's are explanations. Column shift ? There's a gate from park to R.. up forward to Park forward down pull straight back move down to R
When stopped planning for Park move the lever forward and up to Park doahn jus head to Park sloppy.
Remove key
There is a anti theft mechanism designed by the Deevil. ZmI understand IT may connect to the column assembly with one B wire n a small black rectangular clip. I pulled mine out. Not sure what it did.

The gate is a chrome vanadium slab machined by Luigi's cousin Alhambra ...no a screw poss. !
Remove knee pad cover n look past the columns right side past the thick metal hook n cable n there on the upper left is a screw thread your way prob the gate. Any chips ?
Why are we here ? The hook holds the transmission shift indicator cable pulls the needle PR123 !
LUBE THE HOOK WITH FINISH LINE DRY LUBE AFTER SHAKING THE BOTTLE.
better, remove canle, file hook edges smooth..edges are sharpened in Cleveland ..Polish clean n lube rehook cable

The shift PRND21 is gated to P from R. Removing the key…and then re turning reinserting working the key to start prob asks for the correct P p osition when removing the key.
That’s the gate. On the way from D to P stop at R lever forward. Th ere’s a stop. Try pulling back on lever then travel straicht from D to P. When at P find the top of P…pulling lever up then pull acros s the top of the gate back n forth. That’s P
Or…. Lever forward or jambed a bit at R without intent…pull lever back down to the bottom of R as seen on the shift indicator… there may be another gate stop there. From bottom R pull back then pulling back slide up to P and repeat the slide along the top of P.
The jambed key mechanism is handled in the manual. Turn jiggle wheel left n concurrently squeeze down several times on the brake pedal. And after doin g this 1-2X turn key 3rd time. Key should turn. If not wait 5 minutes avoid ing too much brake pedal line pressure n try again. Do not stomp on the ped al.
On the way from P to D or 2 no OD….push lever forward n pull down p oss after a slide across the top P gate. Lever will stop at R then pull bac k then back n down to ND21
Right !
There is a plastic plate with cable on the transmission driver’s si de..on the 2008 van. The plate feeds cable control from lever to AT. Clean plate n lube poss with Liquid Wrench silicone from WAL..not deodorized, a t ool silicone.
While here look up REPLACE SHIFT INDICATOR ASSEMBLY with Utube. The thin st randed cable from the indicator to the column shift mechanism has a loop ov er a hook prob on the right steering wheel shaft up unde rn past the knee p rotector. The hook should be lubed with something like Finish Line dry lube which is used in locks sliding mechanisms n generally on bicycle$.
If compulsive, take the loop off hook n file smooth hook edges n clean.
Dealer sez the $63( here at Terminus) indicator (stout) is different from o nline units ($14). Onlines doahn have the cable. Unfortunate caws the loop wears thru on the hook’s sharp edges thus the indicator fails. Repl acement is no big deal. Pro nylon panel tools n silicone lube dropped off a Q tip plus utube removes panel n replaces indicator.
Happy Motoring !

yup moving up to de-tent n sliding forward back then down seats the P for k ey removal, frees P to R and R to D21.....going down the mechanism rests in a prob wear cusp, going up removing the lower seat by deliberately reachin g the top reseats to effective down.
the process could be like the knee where ineffective wear patterns are vort exed...so check the vastus medialus.

P to R could be maybe unless the lever is slid oonto top of the mechanism to the front then pressured front n moved to bottom to top then slide alo ng top to back corner n THEN moved doWn to bottom R BACK
getting the device working perfectly is not swinging the lever around.
I'll try this rewrite in forums n see what kinda hooting I come up against

OK so having read that ....after starting the vehicle press down part way on the brake pedal in a gentle squeeze or try 2 soft jabs then go thru the posted routine.
The pedal pressure should locate the shift gates for running.

On the way left from drive to park
Stop at R top indent push lever across top forward then across top backwards to full back
The move lever pressure back up to top Park...there could be a 'clunk'
move lever across top Park forward n back..to seat
....
Going from P to R ville
press brake pedal downward several times as a pumping systems action
Move lever forward in back thru park
then in the last of the several brake pumps
With lever pulled back
Move lever to R then D
