2002 WJ Electric door lock problem

Okay guys, today's problem has to do with the electric locks. I went out today with the set of keys without the remote fob. I had no problem locking or unlocking the driver's door but the key would not lock or unlock the passenger doors or the tailgate.

All work correctly with the remote and if the lock/unlock button on the armrest is used.

I double checked with the other key and it acts, or more precisely, doesn't act in the same way.

Settings: Auto-Lock at 15 mph Auto Unlock at exit All doors lock/unlock together

Sounds like your Jeep was broken into and the drivers door lock got changed....

I had the same problem recently with my 04 Jetta. It was as simple as lubricating the locks. The car was only 6 months old so I didn't even consider that as an option.

Is it possible that yu have a valet key and not the full vehicle key? The valet key is designed to only open the drivers door.

Hmmmmmmmmm

I bought this WJ second hand and only got 1 key and 1 remote. I got another key cut and programmed Monday. There are only 2 lock cylinders...the driver's door and the ignition lock. Both keys start the car, both lock/unlock the driver's door manually.

All the door locks work electrically with the remote and the driver's door switch.

There is no mention in the manual as to whether this should work.

I guess I am wondering if the key is supposed to operate all the locks via the driver's door. I don't recall any newer car with electric locks that didn't but it did not occur to me to check with my old XJ.

Perhaps I need a fellow WJ'er (preferably 2002 Laredo) to test their keys and see what happens (or doesn't happen)

Try pressing the unlock button twice within a second or so.

It works with the remote. My question is should the 'key' actuate the locking and unlocking of all the doors/hatch or just the driver's door?

Yes, that answers my question. I have had 6 vehicles with electric locks, this is the first one that I have noticed won't unlock all the doors via the key.

But if it is not supposed to work then I won't worry about it although it will make it a bit more difficult to open the door when you have a lady riding with you.

It's working correctly. Only the driver's door can be locked/unlocked with the key.

Billy Ray did pass the time by typing:

That depends on what flash code your Jeep has.

On most it's the same, two turns to unlock and all the doors unlock. Also in 2002 that feature could be programmed by the dealer to unlock all or just the driver door. But I'm not sure if it could do both that year.

You 'have' to be kidding right?

If the key don't unlock them, then why do they have a key lock??????

That has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard of if it is real....

I have had 6 vehicles with electric locks. Two T-Birds, XJ Cherokee, Audi A-4, Audi A-6, and now this WJ.

The key would lock/unlock all the doors on all of them if I recall correctly. I can't specifically remember with the XJ but as I always open the door for lady passengers I think I would recall unless I always used the remote.

For sure the XJ with electric locks also has working key locks. Two friends have them.

I might buy the guess you only have a 'valet' key, but more likely is my thought about a B+E needing the drivers lock changed and they forgot to give you the rest of the keys.

You can go to the dealer with the ownership and proof of ID and have a key cut for the other doors if that is the case.

I just got off the phone with the service manager at the local Jeep Dealership. He said "the keys will only operate the driver's door and is not connected to the electric locks"

The electric locks can only be accessed by the remote and the door switches.

You are trying to tell me that the doors and rear hatch cannot be opened unless you have batteries in some stupid remote control?

Why do they have key locks on them then? Those locks are really expensive so if they don't work, well......

Well...... the only key locks on the vehicle are on the driver's door and the ignition lock.

There are no key locks on the passenger doors, either back door, the glove box, the rear hatch or rear window.

Everything lockable is done electrically and yes, if your remote dies you have to be inside the WJ to be able to unlock anything.

I know my XJ had a key lock for the tailgate, was there one on the passenger door?
