ARB Rear Bumper/Tyre Carrier - Jeep Wrangler

Hi All,

Has anybody installed one yet? How easy/difficult is it? Any ideas about performance (strenght).

I need to put my spare tyre on a carrier as the tailgate is starting to show signs of the weight of a 32" BFG Mud tyre. I can locally get Warn or ARB, both pretty much priced similarly. I am inclined towards ARB one as it looks beefier and has corner protection (and more accessory options). I am in New Zealand, so importing other makes from the US would be pretty much same price (after taking into account the freight).

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks TW

If you are talking about the real nice arb rear bumper that fits flush. Real nice, but price was out of this world.

Check out garvins wilderness bumper. Lots of accessories to put on her. I have the front and rear and love them. Hilift, gas cans, shovel, ax, etc. Accepts the proprietary garvin rear rack. Plus you get the 2" receiver, and options to put on 2 big arse d rings for when it really gets bad.

I have Garvin's rear bumper/carrier too and while it can hold a lot, the bumper crossmember is sagging a bit after five years of carrying a 33" spare, and the screw-in securement system for the carrier is kind of a pain.

Also, at least on mine, the bumper is NOT rated for towing or extraction. Those D ring tabs are just for show. Maybe later models are.

You do know that that 2" receiver in the bumper is just there for accessories like a bike rack, not for towing right? Those bumpers don't anchor solid enough to be used as a tow point and say so on them.

If you plan on towing, you need a frame mounted hitch still.

On my rear bumper it attaches to the cross member in addition to the frame on each outer side. I pull a little 14 foot flat bottom boat no problem.

The front dring's work fine for extracting, in fact I use them to flat tow behind an RV. The rear it states not to, and I wouldnt either.

Up here in Canada they do random and long weekend safety checks all the time and these cops know their stuff. They would bust you big time if they saw you towing via your bumper.

On the front bumpers with d-rings you need to be sure and only use one ring at a time. If you use both at the same time, the lever action can compress the bumper bending it and the frame into the center. I have factory tow hooks on the front frame of my Jeep and it warns about this in the owners manual.

I just got off the phone with Garvin and he specifically said you can tow 3500 lb gross weight, 300 lb tonque weight. My little boat is nowhere near this, more like 600 lbs total and 50 tonque.

Good info on the d-rings.

That's good to know, Mike. I didn't pick up on that bit in the owners manual.

That is wonderful to note, but the freight from US to New Zealand (about = USD350, plus local importation clearance fee and goods and services tax = at 12.50%) makes it the same price as the ARB from their local dealer = delivered to their shop.

And yes I am talking about the actual ARB rear bumper.

Thanks TW

I spoke to the guys at ARB and he said its a six hour install. He has = just done one recently to another Wrangler and it was a pain to install. = I am just wondering what other people's experience has been.

The ARB one has a hitch and two D-ring slots at the rear. It is rated = to 900kgs towing.

Here in New Zealand, if you have an airbag then the front bumper has to = have a certificate from the manufacturer (crash test and all) saying the = bumper does not alter the airbag trigger and safety feature. Local = engineering shops are reluctant to produce one because of all the = testing involved. ARB and TJM bars certified, I think so are the Warn = bumpers.

Go over to their showroom with a digital camera and a tape measure. Perhaps a local shop could reproduce something better and cheaper.

TJ's airbag sensor/trigger is nowhere near the bumper so it's moot in that application. The TJ uses an intertial sensor located under the dash just forward of the gearshift.

That exceeds the TJ's towing capacity.

Not over here :-) [ here it is 4000lb with braked trailer, you have 2000lb with unbraked trailer].

The d44 doesn't change the wheelbase. The limit here is 2000# if I remember correctly.

But there in Europe they tow travel trailers with what we would consider lawnmower engine powered micro-cars...

Ya know.... there has to be more to that because the new 4 door unlimited is longer and heavier than my Grand Cherokee but the tow limit is only 3500#

Dunno, but I think the hubs are a bit of a weak point on the Wrangler. (cf the Wagoneer's Dana 44 6 stud fully floaters and the TJs 5 on 4.5 semi-floating Dana 44).
