Jeep Wrangler tailgate glass

I just aquired a free OE hardtop for my '02 TJ but it needs a rear window. I priced new glass and they want between $400 and $800! Does anybody have some ideas to where I can find some used glass? I live in Michigan, between Detroit and Flint. I would really appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance, Dennis P.S. Brian, if you read this, THANKS for the hard-top!!

I have seen several folks use Plexiglas or lexan for the replacement. Industrial supply shops sell it and will cut it close to size for you. A jigsaw trims it nice.

Good luck. I lost the rear glass out of my hardtop once and if my insurance hadn't covered it, I would have gotten hosed. Basically you can BUY a used hardtop for the same or less than the cost of replacing the glass.

Brian:

Did you price out that glass at a dealer, glass shop, or body shop.

Check with local auto glass shops. Local body shops may be even less expensive.

Dennis did pass the time by typing:

Go to a local glass shop. Providing the window isn't complicated most can cut one for you.

Worst off go to a local plastics dealer and look at 1/4 or thicker lexan or polycarbonate. Don't use plexiglass, it scratches far to easily.

The window is slightly curved, but at least it isn't compound.

Hi all! Just a follow up to my delima. I tried to take ur advice and went on the net to do a parts search with no luck. Then I just started calling junk yards also, with no luck. Then I called some glass companies and told them I wanted the cheapest rear window with tint. After talking to about 10 different companies, I was quoted $300 with tint. (no defrost) So needless to say, I bought it and am now waiting for my friend to paint my hardtop. It is a "Safeguard" window, which is the same that comes OEM. I just wanted to say thanks to you guys that tried to help me out by telling me where to try to find used glass. But it is not possible to find a used rear window for a hardtop.......ANYWHERE! (Not looking forward to my phone bill) Again, thanks. Dennis
