LSD on XJ Limited? Plus other questions...

Can anyone confirm whether the 94-97 XJ Cherokee Limited's were fitted with a rear LSD as standard? I'm specifically talking RHD 4.0ltr Aussie models. I know that the Sport models had the rear LSD, but I've been given mixed info on the Ltd. Is there any was to tell via tags or part/serial numbers on the rear axle?

I test drove one yesterday with 230k kms which has had a hard life (lots of towing) and if it had an LSD it appeared to be no longer functional. I didn't jack it up to check, but could find no evidence either way by just looking at it from under the vehicle. Really bad driveshaft wind-up and heaps of driveline backlash (not helped by an off-idle stumble). Also any thoughts on the engine stumble? The trip computer only showed compass and temp, if the left button was pressed to show fuel usage, etc the display just went blank - is that normal or indicative of a problem?

Any experience/info/help would be appreciated.

Cheers, Clax.

No, the LSD was not standard. It was strictly an optional extra-cost upgrade. That stumble wasn't caused by you trying to drive in 4wd on a paved road was it??? The Commandtrac 4x4 system can only be used offroad. Driving in 4wd on a paved road will cause bucking and jerking due to the drivetrain being locked up and binding on the pavement.

No I wasn't in 4WD at the time. :-) I'm a driveline engineer, so I'm well aware of the issues that would cause (wind-up, bang, crunch, walk-home, followed by a nasty surprise at the repair bill). This was definitely engine related, it would also do it in neutral and park while stationary.

Jeez I hope the Aussie Ltd's got the LSD standard, or I'll need to re-think getting one. I might need to slum it in a Sport instead... I've got a factory video for the local '94 model Ltd, and in that they state that all Aussie Cherokee's got a rear LSD - "Trak-lok" they called it. I wonder if they deleted that with the 95 upgrade?

I don't suppose there's any way to cram a Dana 44 centre into the rear of an XJ? What do they run, a 32? I can get lockers for a Dana 44 no worries (they're used on a local Ute (pick-up) variant). Mmmmm, I might need to take a look at that local '84 with the 360 in it...

Any ideas on ID'ing whether it's an LSD or not visually?

Cheers, Clax.
