Softening up the ride...

Hi Folks, first time posting here, hope I'm not intruding. I recently bout a '73 CJ5, got a great deal on it. Kid had put a 2" suspension lift and a 2" body lift on it. It'll rattle your teeth out. Would the suspension lift alone cause this, or could he have put really stiff shocks on it? I want to soften the ride up, the worst it'll see with me is some forrest service trails while I'm out running whitewater. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Y'all be safe...

Take the lifts off and get it back to stock. Maybe someone will even buy the lift kits off you.

May I recommend a biker's kidney belt and I hear Victoria Secret make a body duct tape for the ladies when the sports bra just don't cut it....

One easy way to tell if he botched the spring job is to unhook the shocks and drive it like that. You want the cheapest hydraulic 'not' air/gas charged shocks you can find. One problem is Rancho makes an easy to find lift shock and the unwary end up with these Rancho 5000's. They will literally knock fillings out... White with red boots for ID.

We are all intruders here. Ordinarily, one installs a lift kit so that larger tires will fit. What kind of rubber do you have on there?

First thing is most lift kits come with shocks that are WAY TOO STIFF. Mike suggested pulling the shocks off, see if that helps. Second is that the spring lift kits have extra arch (obviously) and that stiffens the spring rate up considerably. Not much you can do with that.

If this is your first Jeep, keep in mind that these things ride rough in the best of times.

I second pulling the shocks and seeing it if is still really stiff. Skyjaker Hyrdo7000's ride very nice. You could also pull one leaf from the front spring packs to soften the ride, but this would shorten the life of the springs.

I appreciate everyone's help... I'll drop the shocks Friday and try it out. These shocks are white, with blue boots, not sure what brand. If it rides better without the shocks I'll get some hydraulic shocks and replace them. Any suggestions on what brand/model?

In the meantime I'm gonna get some of that body duct-tape from Victoria's Secret... I'm thinkin there's more uses for that than Mike mentions...

Thanks, folks. Be safe...

You might want to check the air pressure in those... When I run my

33x9.5's at 32 psi, it rattles teeth. Not too bad at 28, better at 26, but I have tall sidewalls that lean, so i keep it at 28. If they were wider, 24-26 would be more like it.

You can do a chalk test to see how much tread grabs. At 32 psi I have

4" in the center touching... You run some chalk across the tread then drive straight and see how much chalk is left. The best grab is about 1/4- 1/2" showing on each side.
