trailer?

This is probably in a FAQ somewhere, so apologies in advance...but what trailer should I get for my 2001 TJ? I need to be able to haul 4'x8' sheet goods for short distances. I remember reading something about a bare-bones frame (the bed is made from 2x6s or something), but I'm not sure what is the best deal. I'm pretty sure that I don't want the cheapo Home Depot trailer.

Anyway, thanks in advance,

-Jack

Hi Jack, Make sure you get a bed that is at least eight foot long with the tires set back far enough so as to be able to put a couple hundred pounds on the tongue. And be aware sheet rock is the quickest way to turn a Jeep up side down. Nice looking trailers at:

Trailers and Jeeps don't mix. Been there, donethat.

I got this one and had them put mesh sides on it as well. Not sure where you're located, but...

I saw the other responses and have to agree... a TJ is not something you want to be pulling a trailer with, particularly one with much weight at all. I don't really use it to haul much in the way of heavy items, but it helps to haul things since the TJ has such limited room.

I don't know what a TJ is, but I have a 1980 CJ-5, and tow a trailer that is 5 X 8. Of course, I won't put more than about 1500 lbs on it, and will not go over about 40 mph with that. And if it is snowing, I wouldn't pull it at all.

NO, I would not pull a large trailer with a CJ-5 at 65 mph, so I think it has a lot to do with common sense.

Thanks everyone. I'm in Texas by the way. And TJ is a pretty name for a wrangler.

No, I wouldn't tow 4000 pounds in heavy rain going 80mph :)

I mostly need it for bringing plywood from home depot to my garage. Probably never more than 5-10 sheets. I just don't want to buy a truck for those rare occasions when I need to haul something.

Thanks,

-Jack

FWIW, that's a very common solution in England and Australia -- with cars a heluva lot less capable than the TJ!

Jack,

I have a '01 TJ 4.0 that I occasionally pull my 5x8 drop-ramp trailer with. I like it because I've been able to haul 10 foot long 2x10s from Lowe's by stacking them in the middle with the overhang just behind the trailer jack. I've had a little over 2000 pounds of mulch in it and pulled with no problems. I did have to change hitches though. I bought a frame hitch that hung below the factory bumper. It caused both my trailer and the pop-up camper I also tow with the TJ to scrape the ground on inclines (not to mention getting hung off road). So I trashed both the hitch and the factory bumper and got the Olympic rock bumper with receiver. It has worked marvelously ever since. BTW, I have pulled my 1750lb camper at 80mph with no problems.

the TJ is rated at 4400lb / 2000kg here for a trailer with brakes ;-) Perhaps you guys get a lower rating as you are more ligitious / compensation payouts are higher ...

Yes, in stock form. Lift it and put bigger "TYRES" on it, and see what happens.

I've got a 5x8 trailer set up to haul my motorcycles. My YJ actually rides better when pulling the trailer, but since it's a 4 cyl, I find myself spending a lot of time in 3rd gear. My wife's Cherokee, OTOH has pulled that trailer, with 2 bikes and a bunch of gear loaded, all over the country with no problem. The trailer weighs in at about 750 lbs empty and the bikes add about

1300-1400 lbs so I'm at about 2250 when fully loaded.
