YJ parts onto CJ7?

I've currently got an '85 CJ7 and may be buying a really cheap, fully-intact '89 YJ today for parts. I'm wondering how easy/hard it would be to take the full rollcage, softtop, and hardtop from the YJ and use them on the CJ. Are there any tutorials for this? I'll also have CJ full softdoors and YJ hard doors if any of this will work as well. Also, what other parts off the YJ are a good idea to add to a CJ7? It's got fender flares, nice rims/tires, seats (I'd like a new driver's seat ...would the YJ one bolt right into the CJ?), steering wheel, etc.

Thanks for any help!!

The body tubs are the same and most top side parts are a direct swap.

The rake on the windshield is usually slightly different, but I have to adjust mine when I change from hard doors and hard top to soft anyway, so that's pretty normal. You adjust the rake with the two bolts above the main windshield fold down screw, they are slots.

Swapping a roll bar is likely impossible. I would be 'very' surprised if any of the bolts holding your CJ's roll bar in will come out. Or the YJ's for that matter... I guess you could cut and weld the extra pieces in...

It took me a full day of cutting to get my roll bar out in one piece to use again in my 'glass tub and you live in the salt belt too don't you?

I don't 'think' the rims swap, but could be mistaken. Fenders are different.

Most engine parts are the same.

Ya, I'm in the salt-belt. I was actually thinking getting the rollbar out would be quite a chore requiring heating torches, cutters, cold-chisels, and alot of annoyance. Scrap that idea.

As for the tires/rims ...is there any way to do this without changing the axles? The tires/rims on the YJ are NICE and mine are horrible. Maybe it's just wishful thinking?

Thanks again, Mike.

You can always swap the rubber over. And maybe sell the rims for a nice set of steel ones from Canadian Tire. They sell the american racing style of steel rim that is 'really' close to the same stamp or shape as my stock 86 Laredo rims for really cheap.

Where are you located? We are having a 10 day Canadian RAMJ+W run next week in Ontario, all are welcome.

I'm in Wpg, MB. Can't make this one cuz the Jeep still isn't ready to really drive/offroad. However, next summer I'd love to come out and slosh around with you guys. I just need to save six paychecks for the gas for the highway ;p

Ya ...I could probably get some coin for the rims ...gonna go look at it now and probably tow it home.

One thing I've always wanted to do is change out my CJ7 heater floor vent with a YJs. From what I understand it's a direct fit and offers much better air flow direction. Directed at the feet rather than out in space somewhere.

They changed things in 91. Pre 91 YJ's with the 258 have the same heater as the 80's CJ's.

There is a deflector on some of the floor vents, but my CJ one hits the feet great.

You might take a look something like this (last product on the page)...

These convert a 5 on 4.5 (YJ bolt pattern) axle to accept 5 on 5.5 (CJ bolt pattern) wheels. I'm sure there's one that works the other way around. But for that kind of $$ (2 X $125) you can just buy new rims. But these are

1.25" spacers as well (if you wanted to get wider at the same time).

I installed 95 rollbar in my 79 cj7. looks great. I soaked all bolts a few days before disassembly. with a little heat all bolts removed fine. I also added the bars to the windshield frame. Makes a nice clean and simple swap. You can install the wrangler factory shoulder belts if wanted. I also installed the wrangler steering box and pump. It was a direct bolt in. I used the wrangler steering shaft as well. Just need to cut or grind the flat on the Cj column shaft to accept the steering shaft. I used the stock CJ pitman arm. ( I have no lift yet ). you can use the wrangler pitman arm with a mild lift. It's around 2 1/2 drop. Hole distance is still the same. This hole thing made a tight steering CJ. lock to lock is 2 3/4 turns. no more wondering on the road. and all parts are boneyard ready if needed replaced.
