4.0 or 4.6, What is best replacement

I have just done around 10k after upgrading my G4 Discovery from 4.0 to 4.6. This made a relaxed, lazy vehicle into an enjoyable torque rich 4x4. As I tow a lot the extra torque is enjoyable. I would do it any day again but ...if yours is an auto, stick to 4.0. The auto causes lots of issues ....I built a 2001 4.6 auto and it was a failure due to auto box actions.

I vaguely seem to remember an article in one of the rags where a journo reported he found the 4.0 to be a lot more 'sophisticated' than the 4.6 they get in the good ol' US of A.

What problems does the Auto cause as I do have an Auto?

My 4.6 Disco is an auto - I'd like to know what issues I should be seeing? Not seen anything as yet ;-)

The ZF 4HP22 is reckoned to be a good, strong box. Putting more power through it will reduce its life, but unless the factory-fitted 4.6 has a different version, I don't see why it should be a problem.

If I remember well the 4.6 P38 RaRo was fitted with the ZF 4HP24 autobox while the 4.0 and 2.5 tubodiesel were fitted with the 4HP22.

If an electronic box, the torque converter will tell engine a) that it is getting either too much power so back off or b) is getting an error in data so back off. Results in lots of locking and unlocking of torque convert and it ate 3 boxes in 6 months (I did tow a medium trailer as well).

Not the same box as used in USA 4.6 Disco. USA gets larger pumps and torque converter.
