£6,000 for a 2a - late april fools ?

Especially as it's a mish-mash of parts from defenders, range rovers, series 1 and series 2, and probably some kitchen sink somewhere. Mind you I saw a very nice looking series 1 going for £15,000 at a classic car shop!

Classic case of spending far more money on a vehicle than it is worth - which is fair enough, but don't expect to get even a small fraction of it back - and with a non standard replacement chassis, RR engine, axles, gearbox, suspension, and extensively modified body, I would think the tax exempt status is dubious to say the least!

I asked the seller to confirm if he'd made a mistake with the price - i thought he might have meant to start at =A3670 - and his reply was

"This is no ordinary landrover, it is one of a kind and i have spent nearly =A330,000 on it, and have the reciepts to back that up. It is I think, very reasonably priced."

Wonder where he's going, and why he can't take it with him (unless the destination country has Good Taste Police). If it counts as tax emept, it can be imported just about anywhere.

Try getting LR bits in places where they're not imported.

There's one dealer for the whole of India, and he's a 'prestige vehicle' type who's interested in selling film stars Range Rovers and executive jets rather than Defenders...

Listed as a 1963 vehicle, sold as tax exempt, with 12 months tax ;-)

Tell me about it! Try getting parts where it IS imported - I have to get them shipped from Richard, 'cos my local LR dealer doesn't know one end of a defender from the other (he tried to sell me tyres that were too small, until I told him to ring Land Rover France)

India seems to buy old factories rather than old cars.

But the cars they buy the factories for seem to be the rubbish ones.

Old Fiats and the dreaded Morris Oxford and some ghastly old Toyota Land Cruiser model that has a rock solid underneath with very hard leaf springs but also has had all the four wheel drive stuff removed...

What ever happened to the old Cortina Mk III factory, or the Series III factory...

Although I think the Series III factory went to South Africa...

When they start making the replacement for the Defender I wonder who'll buy the old factory...

I reckon he's trying to sell it to the wrong people. From the spec, taking the hard top off would give you a respectable CCV/Comp Safari motor (assuming the roll cage meets "Blue Book" rules, seat belt anchorages etc are ok). If it were a ready-to-race Comp motor, his price is only slightly high, and could even be reasonable.

But I reckon it's nothing like comp spec. He's built it 'cos he likes RR but prefers the look of LR's and can't make his mind up whether he wants Defender, Series or Bowler styling.

Frankly I think it's a pile o's**te ... neither anything or nothing.

Indeed - plus they have some rather strict import laws I believe (local content and that sort of thing)

Could be worse - the Hungarians bought the Meastro Van line....... they never buit one!
