Another Freelander TD4 issue

The experts here having solved the previous issue several days ago - I hope they may do the same with this one. My farmer neighbour recently bought a few years old Freelander TD4 - with the current TD4 BMW engine. The problem is this.It starts instantly but initially produces some white smoke (diesel?). It also runs very slightly roughly-mainly felt as a slight vibration if you lift the bonnet and place your hand on the plastic engine cover. These symptoms do not seem to affect the power and you can drive off normally and after several miles (corresponding to the engine coming up to temperature?) both the white smoke and the vibration disappear. And there is no more problem untill you start again from cold - when the cycle repeats. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause of this behaviour might be - or suggestions for things to try which might throw light on the situation. The owner/farmer is very experienced with traditional diesel engines - but not these electronic jobs.Neither is he computer literate so my job is to post the questions.I hope the afl regulars will be able to provide some answers - or at least suggestions. Many thanks.

It gives me a bad feeling about low compression (ie knackered engine).

Injector not 'shutting off'' & 'dripping' fuel onto a pistion head maybe.
