Screaming fan belt cured

Jul 08, 2008 6 Replies

The fan belt on my td300 would scream & howl louder than Tina Turner every morning. I tried everything I could think of to stp it, most reatments lasting only a coluple of days. However a couple of applications of Waxoyl has done the trick. The wax provides grip and lubrication. Job done. Anybody fancy Waxoyling Tina Turner?

Not wishing to rain on your parade Tony but I had this problem a few months back and thought I'd cured it ... then the water pump seized up and sheared off the drive spindle :-(

As a precautionary move I'd recommend removing the belt and checking that the water pump bearing isn't on it's way out.

Hope you're right though :-)

I too had this on my 300 tdi 90.

Belt used to squeal like hell.

Took the belt of and there was a few mm play in the waterpump... Changed it. squeal stopped.

For the sake of £30 - Id change it.

So would Nige!

It's a 'known problem' and there's a mod out there somewhere to fix it.

I think it's an extra wheel in the belt train, and if it isn't done it can cause problems...

Is that where that song comes from " Slippery breasts, slippier than all the rest" :-) Derek

Strongly reccomend changing your water pump ;) Take the belt off and turn it by hand, it should move fairly freely, if it's stiff, it's shagged :) Oh, and the tensioner bearing goes as well, cheap enough to replace (just buy the bearing off ebay, not the whole tensioner)
