Battery etc.

OK, I put a digital multimeter on my battery and it says 12.34 volts, ignition off, no lights or anything. Next I start the engine, engine running, no lights or anything else,

12.17 volts. I rev the engine, not hard, about mid-way through the rev range, I notice no change in voltage on the multimeter...

Does this mean I have no alternator?

Also I have a battery meter in the dashboard, sits around half-way all the time when driving, this is a volt meter? what is it's range?

While I'm here, I got some of those halfords branded blue headlamp bulbs, what's that all about then?

Sorry to say, but it looks like the alternator could be faulty - you should be getting about 14V with the engine running.

Measurements should significantly rise when taken from the battery. I'll usually expect to go from ~11.5ish without the engine running to at least 13.8+ running.

Why did you buy them...?

Got some Halfrauds 'SB' bulbs in brother's Audi and am pleased to say that they are much brighter than non-SB 55W bulbs. Not sure that they are worth £12 each but never mind he's paying!

Probably your alternator is faulty. A 12v Lead acid will not charge fully below 13.8v, the alternator should be putting out about 14-14.5. Change the battery and re-check, it's possible the battery is soaking charge and pulling the voltage down, but unlikely.

The battery is a leisure battery so I'll be changing that soon.

I thought that was how it should be..

I wanted more light in my car, (not in it, in front of it) as I recall they didn't do much so I bought 80/100's instead, just found them yesterday and fitted them to the Land Rover.

On or around Tue, 13 Jan 2004 17:30:28 +0000, Mr.Nice. enlightened us thusly:

no charge. Do you get a red battery light with the ignition on but engine stopped?

voltmeter, mid point is something like 13V on mine, ISTR. Top of the black is something like 15V, top of the red is probably about 17 or 18. Bottom of the black is about 9-10V I would think, and bottom of the gauge about 6 or

they're crap, IMHO. about looking trendy.

any sort of coloured filter on the lamp or bulb reduces the amount of light you get to see with. Intense blue ones should IMHO be banned, they're dangerous - sure, the make a pretty blue-s**te[1] light, but it's DIM.

the pale blue ones are OK if you like that sort of thing, they don;t cut out so much light. Best bet i've seen for standard bulbs are the Philips "vision plus" or equivalent, the ones that claim to be 50% brighter than standard. make a nice light at standard 60/55 wattage.

[1] nice typo!

err, dunno... I'll check that.

gotcha..

The battery barely started the engine this morning so I dragged the battery to the house and it's been on charge all day. The meter on the dashboard was almost to around 1/4.

Figures.

I like it ;o)

No battery light, but there may be no bulb either..

I collect my new battery tomorrow and the alternator should be here soon, ordered from kaid.
