Discovery I or Discovery II?

I own a 1998 Discovery V8 and am looking at getting a second one for me since the wife won't let me drive it anymore.

I'm totally happy with the 98 and would easily buy a used one without ever trying the a Series II. Should I spend a couple g's more for a 1999 series II or stick with another 98? I have the full cd-rom service manual and like being able to fix it myself as well. Only 1 dealer within 100miles and they are expensive. I read the series II as not being end-user servicable.

Thanks.

not so easily, certainly. and ISTR that the original TD5 was disappointing in the way it performed apart from more top end power.

I'd vote with a late series I and saving the cash, meself. Apart from the clever bits like HDC, SLS and ACE, there's little to chose. If you don;t want those bits, then there's not much to be gained.

I was looking to replace my Series I (1996 V8 ES) with a Series II last year. I drove all the way down to Reading to see one. I drove the best part of 200 miles down there in my Series I and then took a fully kitted ES V8 Series II out for a test drive. I didn't buy it in the end because, despite ACE and sports mode on the auto, I would have been really hard pushed to tell the difference between them in handling, comfort or performance. If anything it seemed a bit sluggish compared to the Series I - maybe it weighs a bit more ?

I ended up keeping the Series I rather than spending 10 grand to "upgrade" and used some of the money I'd saved to build a new competition motor :-)

cheers
