However if they start it in Kent I wil take exception to anybody touching my pride and joy ........ could lead to an interesting demo of the pedestrian vulnerability. Why oh why do we in this country tolerate such bigotry.

The sad thing to me is that the response of the 4x4 club was so defensive.

The arguments should be about the capabilities of the vehicles and their usefulness in all sort of circumstances, the advantage of the high driving position for seeing what is happening around you, the squarish design meaning that you know exactly where the corners and side are and so on.

I see no reason why 'we' can't argue that it's the people with the relatively useless cars that can carry very little and tow even less who should be getting out of our way and onto their feet or public transport.

I would suggest pedestrian survivability is significantly worse against a bus, and I guess its fuel consumption and polluting capacity far worse.

Not just that.

What's the environmental cost of changing a worn out Ford Focus every five years? How much do production lines for the new vehicles cost, ecologically speaking? How much petrochemical resource is used in making their plastics, and energy in their design and testing? What about the disposal cost of the old vehicles and their re-cycle-ability? What about the environmental cost of all those salesmen, parts chains, warranty repairs, etc.

My Land Rover is nearly 20 years old, on its second (re-cycled) engine, and can, with TLC, do at least 20 more years. It's used for all sorts of work that would otherwise be impossible with a 'family car' and even though it's a 110, it's physically smaller than my wife's people carrier (which she needs for work). Its fuel economy is not an issue, as it does very low annual mileage, and if I dent or scrape it, I mutter, but I don't use scarce planetary resources taking it to a body shop.

There is a very effective counter to the eco-bigots, which is that, holistically speaking, my vehicle is far more 'green' than any car made recently. It's also far more useful.

And yes, I have a *lot* of solar panels on the roof of the house, and I Freecycle, and re-cycle too. And I walk...

Regards,

Simonm.

For some time now all vehicle components going on new vehciles have had to be recyclable - plastics etc included.

It's the use vehicles are put to that the antis forget, or rather they don't, they just assume anyone in a city never uses the vehicle "properly". Their pea-brains don't seem to ba able to grasp the concept of "visiting", or "going shopping", or the fact that the Mercedes 2+2 car parked next door has worse fuel consumption, is bigger in plan view and can only realistically carry two people and two sets of golf clubs (a design requirement for luxury cars).

I think it would be a shame to get too nasty and sink to their level about this.

I suggest that what we need to propose a car swap for about a month to see how we all get on. They could drive my Landie and see if they missed being able to hear the stereo over the other noise. I could treat their car like I treat the Landie i.e. Hose the inside out each week to remove the spilt glue, paint and wood shavings, climb on it to cut the trees in my path, use the bumper as a trestle to support the wood or steel I'm sawing etc. etc. Might not encounter the slightly rarer occurrences such as towing a Volvo 240 out of the ditch and towing the 2.5 ton boat across a field but there might be occasion to try this sort of thing, too.

I've just sent him this, in all seriousness. You really can be in the countryside in a less than 5 mis from the middle of Bristol and I do drive through regularly - am I to banned from stopping for pee and a cup of tea?!!

"Dear Mr Rose, I often have cause to travel through Bristol. I also happen to drive a Land Rover. Am I not allowed to stop in Bristol and make use of it's wonderful facilities? Does the same apply to sports/luxury cars that use more fuel have less seats and no towing or carrying capability? I look forward to your reply, particularly with relevance to Bristol, as it is quite possibly the only city I can think of where one can be in the country side within 5 mins of leaving the city centre thanks to the excellent roads out towards the M4.

Yours faithfully, ........"

Building a new car costs 42tons of CO2 , an average car produces twice its weight in CO2 per year say 5 tons in case of a RRC, 2.5 tons for a Focus (1229 x 2 ) say a Focus lasts 6 years 42+2.5x6 x3 replacements=171 tons RRC lasts 18 years 42+5x18 x1 =132 tons enough left over for an indecently quick motorbike. Me neither, but then I'm not expecting to, he'll be to busy telling his little gang of mates (becauase they will listen without picking holes) what a load of buggers we 4x4'ers are because we don't agree with him - rather like meetings of the Judean Peoples Front, or was it the Popular Peoples Front For Judea?
