greasing uj's

just greased the uj's on my disco but there is one that will not take any grease even with a new nipple, it just comes over the edge of the grease nipple. i am sure the gun is locating correctly, is there a knack to doing them, all the rest went ok.

Greasing is an art form.

Yes, I have a similar problem. Taking grease but only coming out one side, so obviously not greasing the whole UJ.

I wondered (but have not tried yet) if greasing after a long drive on a hot day might help. The problem must be caused by old grease (mixed with dirt) that blocks things up, higher temperature might soften it?

Anyone tried, or has better ideas?

New Hardy-spicers ? Stuck ones IME have got grease that's gone completely off, set solid and bollix up the greasing points, of course you could remove the prop, degrease the UJ, regrease and replace, but a new joint is only 15 quid.

Hi,

I chatted to a mechanic at my local LR dealer about this and he suggested greasing the UJ's after a longish run when they are warmer and the grease is a bit looser. I haven't got round to trying it myself but it sounds like it might work.

Cheers

Usual trick is to warm it up with a hot air gun. (I usually use oxy, but you need to be careful you don't do any damage)

sometimes it's down to angle and access - can be tight in side the joint and it may be that yer greasegun is not seating quite true. If the gun grips properly, it shouldn't leak.

bloody rubber seal has naffed off in mine. you used to be able to buy a new head end for the pipe, but not any more, in the local shops, buggrem. I'm damned if I'm going to buy a new gun just to get a new head for the sod.

on one greasgun head/adapter I machine it to a more streamlined shape for better access to tight spots.

less than that from Paddock.

I tend to keep spare sound bearing sets from failed ones, though. Often possible to make a temporary repair which gets you back on the road using "old" bearings.

Possibly not the heavy duty ones I use on my 101. Still, its 12 months since I ordered new joints, and my memory is probably failing !

It is rumoured that Tracy Emmen's next work will have grease and nipples.

Looks good enough in the spec I wonder if the problem is the adapter I see (Austin posted the same) mine is a bugger to seat correctly I have to lean against it to get the pressure up and still get a little bleed back I was in the Truck Parts supplies last week and saw their solution a flexible pipe with screw down end failing that a friendly mechanic with an air gun would probably give it a blast for a beer back in my mini se7en days it was an easy answer to clogged bearings on the rear trailing arms that or dads acetylene answer get it good and hot Derek

Have enough wheels off the ground so that the shaft turns freely (block other wheels as required). Other than damaged/worn nipples or the coupler on the grease gun the usual reason for the leakage you describe is a failure to line up the nipple and the coupler - if the shaft can be turned, alignment is easier.

If you are failing to lube the bearing at one end of the spider arm, lever the spider towards the bearing that has taken grease and you will usually get grease out of the other. Take care not to cut the seals on the bearings.

If that fails, greasing when hot, application of controlled heat or dismantling and cleaning are the obvious next steps.

Even new nipples can be faulty - does it pass grease when not installed in the spider?

Does this one take the standard 400g cartridges?
