How to change a light bulb!

Aug 26, 2003 2 Replies

Hi fans,

I'm away from home (and my owners manual) and one of the headlights on my UK-spec 1989 Defender 90 has just failed. It's the first time this has happened on this vehicle so I've never looked at how this worked before.

I Googled for a manual online but couldn't find any.

The lamp appears to be a sealed beam assembly and I have no idea how to remove it to change it.

Do I first remove the square black plastic trim on the front of the wing which goes around the openings of all three lights on that wing front?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Tony

Yes. From Manual:-

  1. remove the four screws retaining the headlamp bezel (the diagram shows this is the square black trim) Note If the bezel is the large plastic optional type it will be necessary to remove the lens and back plate securing screws and disconnect the leads from the side and flasher lamps, to allow the bezel to be removed.
  2. Remove the headlamp bezel
  3. remove the three recessed head screws
  4. Remove the trim
  5. Lift out light unit
  6. Remove from connector
  7. Bulb or light unit as applicable can now be replaced
  8. refit rim and headlamp bezel regards, JD

Many thanks to Jon and JD for the help.

Tony
