Is this a layshaft bearing noise?

Hi all. hope you can help.

I have a V reg Discovery II, 4.2 petrol/LPG dual fuel, manual.

In the last couple of weeks, I have experienced noise when in

1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse. It's worse when accellerating or decellerating.

A couple of garages lacally have told me thet it's layshaft bearings but I want to be sure.

It's a bit tricky also for me, because, at some point I was thinking of having it converted to an automatic transmission vehicle, possibly by trying to find a donor, accident-damaged car.

Q: Would this be the time to convert it or is it just too big a job? I have been quoted 700 to 800 pounds + vat to have the garbox repaired and reconditioned by a transmission company close to me here in Torquay.

Thanks in advance.

Howie.
