ISP Migration

Mornin

Im going to take the plunge, and biff tiscali for Be (bethere.co.uk)

Anyone on here got any experience with be? They claim to offer 24mb broadband, but i bet that is only if you actually live inside a BT exchange :)

Question is - What happens to my mail accounts? Ive still got access to my old old ISP's mail, so im hoping that Tiscali will keep my current address, at least for a while. I know i wont be able to send via them, but their pop3 should work... Shouldnt it?

Tiscali's internet goes up and down like an up and down thing. Ive changed the router 3 times, and tried their USB thing with no improvements. Plus their call center is non uk based, and the people on the phone struggle to read the scripts in front of them.

I rang Tiscali up to request my migration code, expecting the normal 'Please dont go sir' c*ck, but the woman on the phone just took my details, and mailed it to me there and then!

I've moved a number of my clients away from Tiscali and it's only very recently that they have been freely giving out the MAC codes - as soon you cease your connectivity your mailbox should vanish along with it however I do know that a few people have been able to carry on using their pop boxes for well over a month, but most die when their ADSL goes down. Best things to do is to set your email client to retrieve every minute around the time your expecting the migration to take place so you wont miss much mail.

If you are consistently having connectivity issues you must either have an intermittent joint on your line (does the phone crackle when the sun is out?) - or your router is pants, plenty of import spec routers drop out if the wind blows in the wrong direction - In every intermittent connection case I have seen where the ISP & BT both claim they are not at fault replacing the router with a 3Wire model solves the problem.

Bethere will be like every other start-up ISP, fine and responsive at the start then slow and over seas based when they have more than 100 customers - but then I am just old and bitter.

The router is a Netgear DG384, so it should be ok.

Pretty much, once your line length is about a mile the preformance of th= e

24Mbps stuff is much the same, if not slightly worse, than the 8Mbps offering. Not everywhere has 24Mbps available either.

I should think that once you are not paying your subs your mailboxes wil= l be deleted and username removed from their records. I'd expect this to happen fairly quickly.

This might be a good time to get your own domain name with mail then you= can use any ISP as a method of connecting to the internet and your email= address doesn't change as you change ISP. You do get what you pay for so= I'd avoid the very cheap or free domain services but a reliable service =

shouldn't cost you much more than =A350/year including proper webspace, = less without webspace.

Is that the physical connection or tiscali's service? The physical connection won't change when you switch ISP, it'll still be BT.

"The router is a Netgear DG384"

Ah well that will explain it - we must have installed 30+ of those when they first came out as they were one of the first to integrate a modem/router/hub all in the same box.

Over the past few years they have all been replaced for one reason or other - most were swapped out due to unexplained connectivity problems ranging from dropping the ADSL every 5 minutes, blocking/unblocking all or some ports at random, inventing it's own DHCP scope, melting (one nearly caused a fire in a converted thatched barn/office) - all sites now have 2Wire 1800s and they NEVER go down and just work - It's rare for me to recommend anything IT related as nearly all products have at least some faults - but I really can't fault the 1800.

And there's a cheap one going on ebay 250112245724

Need wireless.

Is this router really that bad then???

I suppose it could be the cause of some of my issues.

Seperate wireless access point.

The 1800 is wireless enabled.

Just a few results from googling "DG834 problems" show that your not the only one.

Mine has never given me a problem - does it need the firmware revisions ?

On or around Fri, 11 May 2007 07:51:51 +0100, Mark Solesbury enlightened us thusly:

Sort out a hosting and domain name deal with included email. I use 123-reg, who are generally OK but lately the pop server seems overloaded. I assume they have plans to upgrade it. I'll be sending them another comment/complaint soon. manifests as a failure to connect at times.

other than that, UK domains are cheap as chips, the basic hosting package is cheap and includes 15 popboxes. You can do just the domain and rent popboxes, without doing hosting. Not sure how that compares on price.

There are sundry others offering a similar set of services. If you want a .net address (like mine) it costs more - but it's still only 10 quid a year, and I like the idea of having a *really* simple email address. it's also non-geographic.

I think you answered your own question, if it isn't broken dont fix it.

I've just started to move some of around a 1000 domains from a number of dedicated Host Europe servers the first of what was going to be 10+

123-Reg dedicated servers - but it's turned into a bit of a joke/ farce.

They seem to update their DNS servers weekly - this makes moving domains to them a very lengthy process. Their online control is pants, none of their scripts work but they don't allow you to run self installed one and a whole heap of other really tedious issues.

I called their tech support people who answered after 45 minutes to tell them that their one of their pop servers wasn't working.

The 16 year old girl who answered told me that they (tech support) expect their users (me) to have enough knowledge to be able to resolve such issues themselves!

I hung up at that point and wished I'd not started the move process.

4 days later and I still haven't had a response to my email submitted to their online support people.

I'm glad I only moved a few domains - can't recommend 123-reg at the moment.

perhaps not the cheapest, but we've had a tatal of 8 hours down time in the last 5 years or so. Ok, so you have to pay this on top of BT or someone, but then you have an e-mail address and web space, if needed, that is yours for as long as you pay the bill. If you change from BT to Scroggins Internet, all you have to do is alter the settings in the control panel - no one would notice the change.

No connection - just an extermely satisfied customer.

Ive got a dg824 which is now a good few years old and it has been brilliant up until recently when it seems to keep dropping the connection every 5 minutes some nights. Perhaps they are all just starting to show their age? Is this what you are getting mark?

Also - the new netgear wireless stuff seems to knock out the wireless on my router. On a clear day some other buggers wireless always kills mine until i restart my router a few times - and i cant quite get a good enough signal to connect to their network and reconfigure their router..

At the end of the day it comes down to how critical the gear is to your business. I've got client sites hosted on cheap hosting solutions where they are not a vital part of their business model. I also have a 2 racks full of gear (at 2 separate locations) running apps and websites that are critical to my clients. Yes it's expensive, but the cost is far higher if they fail. Whether that expense is justified is a judgement call only I can make - but it's pointless complaining about the service from a cheap provider when effectively all you are doing is being a cheapskate.

You'll have to either put up with shit from a cheap solution, or bite the bullet and pay the money for reliability.

but it's pointless complaining about

I object to being called a cheapskate or a moaner - all i want to for service provider to actually and provide what they state, all over their website.

Is that too much to ask or expect ?
