Land Rover Discovery Clutch

Hi all.

Changing gear has been difficult for a while. Some days it is fine and other days it is a nightmare. Anyway today I tried to change gears at a junction and had to put it in neutral then put it into first before it would change gear. Anyway I tried pushing the clutch down a bit harder to no joy. Anyway, it changed gear eventually and then I parked it up came back an hour later and no pressure on the clutch pedal and no fluid in the clutch master cylinder. Then recovered it home by a nice man with a breakdown truck..

Questions - is it likely to be the clutch master cylinder seals, is it a big job and should I look for any other problems?

Clutch has done 2000 miles and the gearbox the same they were brand new only four months ago.

Any help anyone???

Vehicle is Discovery 200tdi K plate 93. 7 seater

More likely to be the seals in the clutch slave cylinder have gone.

Check by removing the cylinder and looking for fluid inside the dust cap.

Just fit new cylinder.

definately the slave cylinder gone , its very common on landrovers especially if the exhaust runs nearby the cylinder .

if the master cylinder had failed youd most likely still have fluid in it as usually they tend to leak between seals and lose ability to compress the fluid , whereas the slave cylinders just leak fluid out past the seals .

the main problem is that they only use on piston seal in the slave cylinder and the heat from eaxhaust shortens life by a vast degree .

youll notice that 300tdi dont have the exhaust very close to slave cylinder .

usually you wont notice fluid leaks from slave cylinder because it will all leak into the flywheel housing out of sight .

easy repair , buy new cylinder , or if using a repair kit flexhone out the cylinder, clean bare cylinder with meths or gunwash or petrol , dry off then assemble and install new piston seals and spring/s . liberally put some brake fluid on the piston and seals before you push it into the cylinder .

use pressure bleeder or back bleed it using a new oil can filled with brake fluid and flexi hose connected .

Many thanks to everyone. I have ordered a new master and slave cylinder and I shall hopefully sort it on Wednesday.
