My overdrive smells funny...

When i drive along using my overdrive and make it work a bit (so up a steep hill in 3rd overdrive, or along the dual carriageway in 4th overdrive) It starts to smell wierd (This is in a series 2A/3). Its sort of like a combination of what i'd imagine hot ep-90 and sticky brakes (i.e. friction) smell like. Is this likely to be a bearing or something that is worn out inside there?.. Is there anything like that in it? Should I be worried or is this normal?

I dont think the overdrive makes that much noise (implying broken-ness), though i can't hear a lot over the engine noise... (my exhaust split into two today, and you can hardly tell!.)

The overdrive itself has plenty of ep-90 in, and doesnt seem to loose any (though it has a constant sheen on the outside). It has a dipstick attached to the filler plug on top, and the oil level is somewhere around the mark on the dipstick (when the dipstick is screwed in place)

sound like the rear seal gone on back of gearbox leaking EP oil onto the handbrake shoes

I dont think it's that, as my handbrake still works fine. When the rear seal on my old g/box went it was pretty noticeable by the lack of handbrake!

I also really does only smell when i use the overdrive!

It is difficult to see what could change when the overdrive is being used, as the overdrive is constant mesh, so the works are turning all the time. One suggestion would be to check whether the overdrive is getting hot when being used, which would indicate a faulty bearing that only shows up under load. Another possibility is that the changed position of the overdrive lever is allowing fumes to come into the cabin when it is in the overdrive position, rather than generating the fumes. JD

I didnt know it was turning all the time..

It does get very hot. I went out to check the oil the other day after getting back in from a drive about an hour earlier, and the overdrive was still very hot to the touch.

It also appears to be breathing oil out of a breather near the top too. (The overdrive is covered in oil which seems to have emenated from one point - unless it just happens to look like this due to the way oil has got onto it from elsewhere?). Is this right?, or would this also imply that it's getting too hot? (or have i overfilled it slightly?)
