I'm after a Series III (2.25 petrol) ignition barrel and associated keys. Has an existing barrel, but the keys are firmly stuck in. At the moment it has a starter button too, but not sure if that should be there or not??? Barrel turns like it should be used to turn the starter, but nothing happens.
What sort of a job is it to change over?
Cheers,
Matt

Series III should start off the key - I'd guess the starter button has been added as the switch on the column lock is knackerd. Unfortuately you can't just change the barrel on the column lock, so it's a new assembly RTC4772, not cheap! (It's in Series III->Steering at the moment - note to self, get finger out on sorting Series III pages out). Plus a couple of 51K4001L (which are in Series III->Body Trim for some bizzare reason.....argghh!) shear bolts.
You have to take off the column shrouds, free up the instruments so you can move them out of the way, and then either tap round the old shear bolts with a small chiesel, or attack then with a hacksaw through the gap betweem the lock and the clamp (damage the lock rather than the clamp so you don't need a new one). If the steering wheel will come off (take off the nut and thump in from behind with both hands to keep it square to the splines usually works ok) so much the better.
If you decide to go ahead with changing the lock, and you can leave the vehicle for a day or two if it goes wrong, you could try lots of light oil and large pliers on the key - it's 50/50 whether it snaps or comes out - if it does then usually a good dose of 3-in-1 or similar and some working may get it going again. It that does work, then if the electrical switch on the back is faulty that is available seperately - 579085 is the baby (which is in the right place - Series III->Electrical - hoorah!).

The existing lock has probably disntigrated internaly, so the key won't come out

Thanks Richard....why does the word 'Bollocks' spring to mind??!!!
Sounds like a job for when I've got a week to spare and plenty of alcohol to dull the pain!

Or it's a conversion from a diesel, which had the preheaters on the "III" position of the key and a starter button. My early 110 still has this - turn the key to III and it lights the cold start light, press the button to make it turn over. That started off life as a 2.5 NAD.

That's weird - my 110 is a 2.25 diesel (so older than yours), and the key works as expected (no button). Are you sure yours isn't a conversion?

It most likely is, but some early export 110's didn't have a column lock so it is possible - or it could be a military thing I suppose?

Strange. I'm sure I've seen the same key-to-preheat and button-to-start on SIII diesels.
what does yours do for preheat?

I have key and tit start on one of my SIII diesels! I just thought it was a bodge because it is not a Landrover engine in it.
Well know I know.

Hold half way between III and ignite. It was the same on my 1988 2.5TD
