Speak English Vodaphone call centre

Hearing that Dell are having the same problems with theirs or I should say Dell's customers are having the same problems, not surprising when English is not their native tongue and the English they do know is taught to them by other Indians. Some of the trained visitor guides out there are difficult to understand.

Perhaps if you spoke like in "Goodness Gracious Me" you might understand each other, isn't it. :-)

I have the same poblem with Geordies, Glaswegans and Mancs......oh and thick Sheffield accents too! Give me a good Indian accent any day :-)

Geoff

I've never had a problem with any accent - but have a feeling that the problems are due to call centre culture and staff churn more than anything else. Working to a script or trying to quickly navigate a 'knowledge base' (sic) is no replacement for experience - wherever the poor underpaid, bored droid may be located.

Exactly, a friend of mine worked for a UK mobile phone company, when it takes 3 minutes in the computer system to find out how much the bill the customer is complaining about is actually worth, you have a problem. (1.50ukp (!) fortunately my friend was authorised to cancel it, at least the system wasn't that stupid)

Not necessarily. In some parts of India, English IS the native tongue. The only area I know for sure is Bangalore, the people I met from there had excellent English, better than many of the sation annoncers that the London Underground use. You would think that a clear and understandable pronunciation was a qualification for the job, apparently this is not the case!

I suspect that a lot of the problems are due to skimping on training, you can't blame the person on the other end of the phone for that.

Ah I wondered where my post went, should have been on alt.telecom.

Still I've calmed down now, and now I've thought about it, who cares where the call center is, my point is, the person on the other end, didn't understand what 'Can you tell me the cost per minute to such and such number is' A telephone company, surely that is quite important.

As it happens the number is blocked, so I've now got to try to explain to them, that they need to open that number up on their system for me.
