if they have emigrated to NZ or Australia, then that is their home, not blighty - blighty is their country of birth (which no-one can really forget). It is their choice to emigrate whether it be through work or family or even just a change of scenery so they should either accept the new way of life or pack up and move on. I've lived in several countries in Europe and for a while in Canada and there are always brits who moan about the place yet when i say they should go home if they don't like it then there's all the usual but..but..but.. - But strangely enough, i've never actually met anyone from down under who moans about life elsewhere? is this the norm or do you all just let the brits whinge on?

ISTR you and Richard having trouble getting email backwards and forwards, hence your posting of shopping lists in the group, I don't think that's entirely unreasonable.

Do bear in mind Nige that this is a strictly technical discussion, the chap said that usenet is about broadcasting views to many people and not intended for one-to-one private communication of no interest to anyone other than two people, that's accurate, and can't be argued against. It's like the difference between whispering sweet nothings to your partner via a mobile phone or a megaphone.

However I suspect that perhaps he's not noticed that you usually preface your beamends shopping lists with grumbles about not being able to email him, so this is the easiest means to contact him for you.

I've been posting to lots of usenet groups since 1991, over that time period it seems to me that the main reason it's not full of retards and trolls is because it's in the uk heirarchy, yank-dominated groups are appauling, only the uk.legal heirarchy comes close!

The fact that if you want to communicate a message to one particular person, then you should use email? The fact that if you want to broadcast a message to a group of similar minded people you should use a newsgroup? The fact that your shopping list of parts is irrelevant to anyone else who sees the newsgroup?

It all seems pretty straightforward to me.

I would tend to agree with this. I've done quite a lot of business with Richard over the last couple of years, and it's all been off-group, via his website, email or the phone. I think that's how it should be - the newsgroup is for the group, and stuff between two people (shopping lists, romances, arguments) generally should be taken to email when it stops being of interest to the group as a whole.

you're making an unwarranted assumption that the list of parts Nige needs to do a certain job is of no interest to someone else. If someone else has the same job to do, then they might be interested.
