Thank Christ for that. I was beginning to panic about what the state of my
96 might be.

Well, I dunno if it'll help, but I replaced the inner 1/4 panel (wheel arch & all) on my 79 rangy just before xmas.
As it's only a 79, and it's only for going camping in, I wasn't too stressed about nice fit, etc etc, but it seems to have held up to the Aussie dust ok.

a few photos on what I did. White rangy (had been rolled) was thedonor, into the blue one (rusted out). More or less, it was cut out the panels with the grinder, (leaving overlap), clean, paint, run a bead of sikaflex on the blue rangy, stick the donor panel in, and pop-rivet it down. More paint over the top, and carpets back in. Test drive.
I did find that there was a bit of a dust leak from around the access panel right in the rear corner (in between the tailgate and the filler pipe bulge), but more sikaflex fixed that too.
(Ignore the dust and dirt in the last photo, that was from driving around with the tailgate open!) If you look carefully about 25mm away from the tailgate (towards the front of the car), you can see the overlap between panels.
