No. There are no BMW built or designed engines in Discovery and there never will be in the medium term. A BMW diesel is used in Freelander and all present Range Rover versions and previous model straight six diesel. The use of BMW engines in Range Rover will end this year and the TD5 engine will also be ended in Discovery by the year end and probably in Defender soon after. It is also fairly certain that the four cylinder diesel in the Freelander will be replaced with a Ford unit soon.

The TD5 is a Land Rover exclusive.

I agree with what Huw says, but some people do - incorrectly - refer to the Td5 as a/the BMW engine.

The "BMW Engine" is the 2.5 Turbo Diesel as fitted to the P38a, also seen in Vauxhall (GM) Omega. I had one in an Omega and it was awful, and in the default P38 tune they're lamentably underpowered, but they are actually quite good engines if you're prepared to put a bit of work in. Jeremy Fearn uses one successfully for competitive hillrallying.

and the 3.0 in the "TD6" Range Rover. Pity they never made the big bother of the TD5, as was the original plan.
