Way way OT Mercedes A Class convoluted belt (with apologies)

Convoluted belt for water pump, alternator etc in Brother-in-law's Merc A 160 (S reg) has snapped. Can't find any info on the WWW on how to access, never mind change, the belt. Not helped by trying to research the problem before I actually see the vehicle tomorrow.

Any suggestions gladly accepted.

TIA

Richard

Thanks Derek. Unfortunately what little Russian I learnt at school has long since evaporated. I have, after a long and painful search through Google, found

with the chilling comment that it is not going to be the easiest belt I have changed. It also appears that the underside of the A class is plastic and the ground clearance so low that standard ramps must be extended by about 6'

I wonder if I can off-load my spare RRC on the B-I-L

Cheers

it is for the weasel engines but has a nice picture of the belt which looks a little like a game of Mornington Crescent. RRC , spare ? Derek assisted by the lovely Samatha

1988 RRC 3.5 Vogue SE auto -> took it to my 'bloke-wot-spanners-it' before Christmas for my annual wallet haemorrhage with a fair bit on the list of 'must be dones'. In the middle of conversations about what he saw as his future he mentioned that he had bought in as a scrapper a 1990 3.9 Efi Auto almost solely because of the CSK wheels but found it too good to scrap. He'd done the footwell welding and what little other MOT work was needed and was wondering what to do with it, so I bought it. It does need some attention - you may have seen my impassioned thread about fuel vapour condensation tank plumbing - and the electrics are a little odd - flicking the mirror adjuster makes the central locking solenoid chatter and the rear windows operate from the main switches but not from the door switches and the driver's seat does not recline evenly. But the performance is far better than the 3.5 and it doesn't have a bloody sunroof!

So, I have an untaxed SORNed 3.5 RRC which _may_ become a source of spares for the 3.9 - there's what I hope is a noisy rear diff to investigate for example. Or it may be scrapped. Or I might try to sell it (ha ha). Or failing that I may _try_ to give it away.

I've been offered a M reg one with only 80,000 miles and cosmetically very good, out and in, but it has rust, one brake pipe has burst and the diff pan looks ready to perforate. I wonder if it lived near the sea.

My dilemma is whether to cannibalise it and stick the engine and box in a "spare" 101 ambi and covert back to GS or would this be sacrilege?

Engine / gearbox subframe has to be loosened and lowered to change the belt. It is not an easy job. You may find the tensioner assembly is worn (causes belt to shred or continually fly off) which is a nightmare to change and £120 in itself.
