WELL OT - B & Q

Mark Varley has a LOT to answer for...

Just (25 mins ago) been to B & Q to get some odd bitsa overpriced essential crap - cos everywhere else is feckin shut init...

Anyway... Needed a couple of bits of ally - which is in the same isle as things like chain and rope... Walking past the rope there were a youngish couple (early 30s or so) who were, erm, how to put this...

...trying the decorative rope on.

I didn't actually notice until I heard the woman ask if the colour was alright!?!

They were not at all selfconscious...

Crumbs, an education, this ere Landie stuff, init!

Well, I have heard that B & Q, in some circles, is known as Bondage on the Quiet!

Perhaps they don't have those convenient springy loops above the rear doors. Always worked for me.

What am I the root of all kinkiness now? lmao. B&Q isn't so good for rope, a decent chandlers is where you want to go. Or I have a guy in the netherlands makes most of mine to-order.

I'll be feckingoff now.

I've yet to find a decent supply of good quality 'magicians rope*'. It's either too stiff or kinks or is far too floppy. Did once have some very good 'laid' stuff but it simply wore out. The braided stuff doesn't ever feel right and refuses to flow as well. The 12mm matt braidline being the exception. Only other stuff which came close was some slightly worn Plasma 12 strand, but it didn't 'look' right.

(*serious comment, by the way).

I believe if you get a length of kernmantle climbing rope, and remove the 'kern' keeping the mantle, you'll have just what you want. You can do this by pushing the mantle over the core, which increases its diameter and loosens it.

I can't remember when I was told to do this, but the result is a very flexible braided, tubular 'rope', usually thick enough for what you want, especially if you start with a thick rope, as obviously it stretches and gets thinner than the original.

I'd have thought plain white would be best for stage work, but obviously you could have whatever colours/patterns you can find offcuts of in a caving/climbing shop. Steve at Bernie's in Ingleton would be a good starting point, and he sometimes has odd thicknesses - heavier kernmantle stuff sometimes gets used by the military, even though it's too thick for most abseiling/SRT kit. I got an excellent Petzl left-handed non-reflective-black ascender from Bernies or Inglesports some years back - mil surplus.

Sometimes it's useful being sinister...

Simonm.

BTDT I'm afraid, but as you (went on to) say, plain white is what I'm after. I also find if you de-kern rope, then hand it out, the punter 'suspects' there's something odd about it.

Having said this, I do usually pop into the Edge shop (local, 5 mins, dangerously close for lunchtime) and buy their 'used' ropes. Not suitable for _any_ climbing, but great for teaching my young wannabe wizards some basic rope stuph (once washed!).

If they'd gone for chain they wouldn't have had to worry about it being the right colour!

I use two kinds of chain, both from machine mart, nice polished galvanised, pretty it is.

The white rope I use is usually the 6mm or 12mm braided white cotton, girl sells it on ebay, I usually buy it by the 100 metre then sell off some surplus, I'm not sure it'd be stiff enough for magic work though, but I do have 20 metres of white semi-synthetic which is notably stiffer, probably due to the synthetic core but the outer doesn't slip like you'd expect, that's the stuff...

can't remember where I got it mind. had it a couple of years.

I hardly ever use it though, it might want to retire to a more innocent line of work.
