2nd gear Mondeo mk2

May 07, 2012 5 Replies

Second gear getting a bit difficult to select when cold. Nothing serious yet, just needs a bit more effort to get gear lever into 2nd slot and slight clunk as it slides in. No idea when gearbox oil last changed. Would that help?

Thanks Pete

It's possible that there is no drain plug; if you want to change it you will probably have to pull a drive shaft to drain it. Might be worth checking the level if you haven't done so already.

Also, does the clutch bite early? IOW, will it move off as soon as the clutch pedal comes slightly off the floor?

Chris

Clutch bites pretty high, about 3/4 of pedal travel. Not checked level. May ask my local garage to change gearbox oil if they feel it could be the problem as its due for engine oil change too, so get them both done.

Pete

It's fairly unlikely that an oil change will help; it's 'lifelong' stuff these days.

I'm guessing it's done a few miles? The likelihood is that the synchro is a bit worn. You may find it will be something you have to live with on a vehicle of that age.

Chris

e:

99,000. Can live with it as only when cold.

Thanks Pete

It will just be worn synchro hubs at that mileage, many cars do it, especially Fords. A new synchro hub is at about a hundred quid, plus 400 to fit it.
