Driving around in 2nd and 4th!!

Yet another faulty 300 tdi gearbox! I bought an R reg 300 tdi discovery about a year ago and the gearbox has been getting worse ever since. It only has 70k miles on it so it has hardly been to the moon. Firstly it became very tempermental getting it into 3rd gear, then a couple of months later 1st started to get difficult to engage and now 5th sometimes grinds a bit when being engaged. The problem is now so bad that I often just drive around in 2nd and 4th gear because the embarrasment of grinding gears in the middle of town like some learner driver is getting to much.

I have heard that this might simply be down to the gear selection plate beneath the consol (if so then how do I get to it and is it a sunday morning job) or is it time to fork out =A3100o to get a recon R380 unit fitted?

Are you sure one of the springs in the clutch plate hasn't broken up? The symptoms you describe are not classic LT77/R380 box ones, unless you count old oil (it should be changed every 6,000 miles), or even no oil! It could even be the clutch arm breaking through, or just a duff slave cylinder.

Similar problem to me, I found it was simple a piece of broken metal in the selector housing on top of the box. It took me about half hour to get it all apart (just 4 bolts hold it to the top of the box), 2 mins to find the problem, 5 mins to fish the bit of metal out, and half an hour to put it all back together again, and then of course, another 30 mins to phone people to tell them about it!

Last year my 200Tdi disco developed worsening gear changes, hard to get into some gears etc etc. Turned out to be the clutch slave. Pedal felt perfect though. If I cracked the bleeder and let a couple drops fluid drain out, then she was right as rain for a few days. I drained the whole system, washed out the little steel disc reserviour thingy near the clutch slave and put her all back together again with a new kit in the clutch slave and all been A-ok since.

Of course it took a hell of a lot longer to put the slave back in again, coz yours truly pulled out the push rod which clips to the fork! Who the hell designed those darned little plastic retainer clips in such an inaccessible place? ....I'll kick their a*ss if I ever find out.
