A friend of mine has lost his key for his renault clio: M reg, 1994
He has gone to nearest renault dealer with chasis number and proof of id/ownership. However the dealer informed him that they could not find the key number of the car on their system and he is wondering what to do next.
I wonder if anyone has any advice.
Last resort, buy new lock set (Vauxhall ones are about 50quid, not sure how much Renault will charge you). Punch/drill drivers door lock to get in, replace all locks with new set (which should come with two spare keys!). If you are really unlucky the immobiliser will be released by a transponder in the key, in which case you need to take the ECU out and get it re-programmed for the new key(s).
I deadlocked the keys in a 1988 Vauxhall Senator once, got the RAC out and they couldn't get in without causing damage! It's a 1988 car for gods sake! After much trying I ended up punching out the lock and using the well know security flaw in the early Vauxhall deadlock system! I hope your Clio hasn't got a decent deadlock system!

Why-oh-why-oh-why do people only ever have one key for a car? Presumably each owner forgets to take one key when they chop it in, but why does the owner whose reached one key not get a new one cut?
People just keep putting it off! After TWO major scares with my wife's Vecta I got another key cut! It was even an immobiliser key (20quid to get cut/programmed) so doubly stupid not to get it done when we bought the car! It's now safely stored at home!

A proper automotive locksmith will be able to help - either get him to open the door and then have him replace all locks or get a key made off the number that should be on the lock itself.
