Air in clutch system

A plea for help.

I have a N reg 1.7 diesel turbo Vectra that has a funny clutch problem.

The clutch pedal becomes all floppy and difficult to engage gear and no amount of pumping gets going.

My friendly mechanic, hi Neil if you are watching, has replaced the master cylinder and we have bled the system. Even though its not losing fluids, there seems to be air in the system.

We have bled the system and got the pedal back but after about one minute of the engine running, the pedal goes all floppy again and requires bleeding.

After bleeding and doing a test run, the pedal goes floppy again and you can hear the air in the system as you pump the pedal.

The next stage is to replace the seals on the bleed valve and the end of the gearbox.

Has anyone come across this before and can help solve the problem?

The last stage is to drop the engine and remove the gearbox and replace the slave cylinder and replace the clutch at the same time. This is not a job for the faint hearted and one we both would enjoy by-passing.

Any help please?

Quite probably slave cylinder, had this on an old Talbot Solara. Is it really so impossible to get to that it requires the gearbox off? Am not familiar with this engine but that's a hell of a lot of work for something that actuates the clutch lever! Bring back the old days, 5 minutes to replace a slave cylinder! :)

Vauxhall had possibly the most stupid idea ever [1] back in the early

90s and decided that the best place for the slave cylinder was in the gearbox / clutch housing..... [1] Stupid for the consumer, but a stroke of genius for dealer profit margins.....

Happened to me on a Volvo 740, slave cylinder went. It was external though.

completely freeing and mechanic says clutch slave cylinder needs repositioning. Gearbox out job. They are taking the piss!

IIRC the gearbox off job also involves removing the front subframe on a Vectra, which then really needs properly realigned when it goes back on.

Or is that Mondeos?

Still a pig of a job. Might as well do the clutch while it's out. (c:

Yup, thats it! Adjust clutch on a Mondeo Mk3. First remove the front sub-frame. Then remove gearbox.

It all makes work for the Ford Dealers.
